I was in Japan for 8.5years.for1.5years I was a Japanese language student and passed a University entrance exam, but for my bad luck I overstayed my visa. On the 2003.3.30 I voluntarily surrendered to the immigration and returned to my country. The law said that I am not allowed to re-enter Japan for another 5 years.
Again I need to make a short visit to Japan. (Not to make the same mistake twice)
Has the law changed to 1 year from the 5 year ban of re-entering Japan? Or is it possible to obtain visa as a business traveler to Japan as I have made several imports from Japan?
Please can someone advise me on these issues or introduce me to someone who is able to advise or help.
Many thanks

What does your stamp say in your passport about re-entry?

I was in the Tokyo Immigrations office last month (March 2005) to help translate for my friend who overstayed his visa for 14 years. He wanted to clear himself out of the country. And he finally did. He is now out of Japan. The immigration officer told him that he can come back to Japan after one year. And he told us that the law now says that if you were arrested somewhere and deported by the immigrations, you will need FIVE YEARS to come back to Japan. But if you left Japan voluntarily just like what both you and my friend did, you can come back to Japan after ONE YEAR.

So the moral of the story is, if you commit a visa offence, give yourself up with an apology and a smile. One year isn't that long to be parted from Japan. Then you can come back and continue doing whatever it was you were doing before.
