Hi I was just wondering if anyone knows if I can buy Soy Milk in Japan? If so what does the packaging look like, I can't read kanji.

Any help appreciated
Thanks

You can indeed. I buy (bought) it all the time. If memory serves me correctly, the package is green and has these characters on it “¤“û or something like that. if that's not so helpful, it's called "tonyu". usually in the milk section of the local grocery store.
sorry if that is absolutely no help at all. it's all i can offer at the moment...

If you live near Saitama you can finnish mine off for me. I saw it in the supermarket, thought I might try a small carton. Tasted it and 'Yuck what is the crap!?' The unflavored stuff tasts like crap. Unless you like that healthy stuff, try to find flavored! Not the “¤ milk!

I have been looking at the soy milk and wondering...... they say its good for us girls cuz its close to female hormones of something.... (be careful guys) of course I expect it to taste like shix but is there a flavoured one that is not so bad?

Eku...it doesn't taste like ____ at all...although some varieties are sweetened in Japan...if that's you thing...

try some in your tea...it ads a nutty kinda taste...I have it with everything except cereal)...make smoothies with it using fresh fruit...maybe strawberries, 1 egg, 1 table spoon of honey and a little protein powder (if you go tyo the gym...if not cut that one out)...and a tub (or half if not in Japan) of plain acidophilus yoghurt

Soy milk is great tasting, available everywhere, even in the convenience store. The plain unsweetened (the best !!!) milk is usually in a green carton that is bigger than the tall cows milk ones. (same size as UHT milk cartons in UK). It has the kanji “¤“û on it. You can also buy sweetened stuff which personally i dislike. You can buy small cartons of soy coffee and soy tea in the stores too, but it is loaded with sugar.

The best thing: you can get latte, cappucino, americano and machiato with soy milk, hot or ice, from all Starbucks in Japan. You have to add 50yen to the price mind, but it tastes fantastic. Try a hot soy latte with a little honey.....

Dotour also do soy milk, but the coffee is not so good I feel.

Personally, I drink soy milk because I developed a cows milk intolerence a few years ago which gave me a gurgling stomach. Soy doesn't, but it does go through you a little faster!

Good luck.

Costco has vanilla soy milk, but you have to buy a 12 pack which will set you back about 1800yen! It's nice though. 150yen/litre is about the cheapest I've seen it in a Japanese supa, but more like 200yen is usually common. You have to be a member, or go with someone who is a member to shop there.

http://www.costco.com/Warehouse/Location.aspx?country=Japan

If your stomach's dealing with you, get into the Caspian Sea yoghurt that people often make here at home. You just need to get the yoghurt off someone and you stick it in some full milk. After 8-10hours or so @ room temp it's done. Faster in summer. If it's very cold, like during winter it may take overnight plus a day. It keeps in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. Start a new batch in a new container from that yoghurt. You just need a clean container, no other special equipment. CSY tends to be a bit more honey-like and runny , but if you leave it out a bit longer it will thicken up much more.

If you are lactose intolerant, i think you can often still eat yoghurt because the bacteria breaks down the lactose.

Kuro_Kitty, just a question. I'm trying to lose a couple of kilos (5kg) and have been downing the protein shakes. I don't go to the gym but I do walk/jog and do light weights about 4 times a week. I've heard soy milk is a lot healthier but is protein the way to go? Any tips anyone? Thanks

Hey, just watch out for all the other stuff in the protein shakes, like artificial sweeteners and especially high fructose sweeteners. The latter are not going to help you lose weight! Same for soy milk that is sweeetened with fructose.
Why not just stick with the real thing, ie tofu, natto, whole grains, etc? Ever seen the amount of protein in 100% soba noodles? Pretty darn good. If you really want the soy milk, you can get it from your neighborhood tofu maker for MUCH cheaper and even have them put it in whatever container you bring--no waste!
ps Soy milk with the soy "okara" in it has much more protein.
pps Soy is fine for men in whole foods like those mentioned above. The cautions people have raised are about purified soy protien preparations that have like 200g of protein per serving--more protein than anyone needs in a day.

i'll agree with what the naturalist said. but i'll also say that if you're looking for something along the lines of a protein shake, you might want to try meal replacement packets. most (the ones i take anyway) have less than 2g of sugar and have lots of nice healthy stuff in them. i know you can get EAS meal replacement packs at places like Spoteka in osaka. they are kind of pricey, mind you, but relatively worth it....

I don't really understand your question...but if you want to lose 5kilos and aren't doing weights then you shouldn't really be drinking protein shakes...its only for people who are training their muscles really....but you could try drinking the protein powder mixed with water instead of milk...?

If you want to lose weight fast then STOP eating ALL forms of animal producst (with the exception of tuna or fish fillets...NO SHELL FISH IT FU##S WITH YOUR DIGESTION)....

Follow this diet

Morning
upon rising drink water with a dash of fresh lemon juice

go shower or wait 20 mins before eating

for brekky (depends if you are a serious brekky eater...I am so...but if you're not fruit should suffice...if you are...) eat rye toast with baked beans as topping OR bananas as topping OR tahini as topping

Morning Snacks
Herbal tea (no milk) OR
Glass of unsweetened soy
Any kind of nuts
Fruit Fruit Fruit or veges...

Lunch
Rye bread tuna sandwich (no butter no mayonaise...try the tuna with lemon and cracked pepper...John West Tuna in a can)
OR
bruschetta (onlky on rye bread with tomato, red onion, basil and olive oil...)
OR
brown rice and tofu stir fry with broccoli, peas, corn, onions...whatever veges tickle your fancy
OR
100% vege soup (tomoato, pumpkin whatever...just don't add anything and use soy milk if you wanrt to make it creamier)

Afternoon Snack
more herbal tea
more fruit \more nuts

Dinner
Wholewheat spaghetti with tomato paste sauce with heaps of garlic and onion and mushrooms

OR

brown rice with tofu and variety of veges...sesame and olive oil are ok

OR
bruschetta
OR
some kind of sushi dish with tofu and brown rice....no sauces...no salt...

DO NOT EAT
white rice, pasta or bread
any sugar
any salt
milk, butter, yoghurt (unless it is made with soy)
meat
caffein coffee
caffein tea
****anything artificial really.....

trust me...it really works

try this for 2-3 weeks and u should've lost quite a bit of weight....I did this diet for 2 months and went from 60kgs down to 52kgs ( alitle too much really...put about 4kilos back while i was in japan)....but i was very disciplined...and smoked my arse off to deal with the cravings in the first 3 days.,......oh...and if you are on the contraceptive pill go off it while on this diet....good luck

alternatively try the INFAMOUS *7-day cabbage soup diet* that is fed to heart patients in hospitals...just do a google on it....

What about those of us who have been using one muscle in particular to an extensive, perhaps excessive extent? I find that due to a recent rapid increase in my level of protein donation, my protein levels are seriously depleted.
BTW, thanks for the diet plan. You are really up on that stuff. I just tend to stuff me face with what is handy. Not the finest of personal nutrition plans, eh!?

Yeah i would have to say that buying soy by the carton is pretty much the only way to go. It keeps for a long time, is cheaper in bulk and handy to have around if there is ever a serious earthquake.
I buy the ones in the green box with the two manga characters on the box with genmai flakes. DELICIOUS. Get the flakes by the carton too.
There are many farmers collective markets around japan where they have a shopping area near the wholesale market. Plenty of local fresh veggies (plus the aforementioned soy and flakes)
Usually cheaper than the supermarket too.
Don't know about you lot but I would rather pay the farmer who grows the food the yen, then some corporation. Saves on gas and repackaging too.
Also please bring your own bags to the market. Plastic really bites. Reduce its consumption because in japan they just burn it.

Hi I was just wondering if anyone knows if I can buy Soy Milk in Japan?

That is one of the finest examples of sweet innocence I have yet seen here.
I am NOT making fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OP,
The unprocessed organic stuff is yummiest. it is Muchousei-yuuki tounyuu

Or, cut, paste, print, and show to store people:

Get some Genmai flakes, also preferably organic, and YUM YUM YUM.

DO NOT EAT
yoghurt (unless it is made with soy)

gYoghurt increases natural intestinal flora, preventing the development of pathogenic germs, including salmonella, E. coli and Candida. Yoghurt helps the body digest proteins and glucides, absorb vitamins B and K, and has been proven to suppress cancer cells. It can also prevent allergies like hay fever, age-related disorders and obesity. It is much better to replace slimming pills and nutrient supplements with larger quantities of yogurt, especially for breakfast, tea or as a snack.h
http://metropolis.japantoday.com/tokyo/467/health_beauty.asp

The problem with most commercial yoghurt is it has too much sugar in it. Some researchers in Japan found that eating sugar-free yoghurt helps against bad breath! Check out this article which you can use in your lessons too. Maybe a good hint for some students!!

Thanks for the yogurt facts!
When i was doing toxicology research, i stopped eating dairy because i could see for myself all the crap that was expressed in cow milk that i didn't particularly want to injest--steroids, antibiotics, pesticides, you name it...
But you know what, dairy is not in and of itself as terrible as everyone has been led to believe. I have found a great organic milk here made by the Takahashi dairy. You can get it at a lot of natural food stores--in a brown package with a smiling cartoon couple on the side. They also make a great yogurt, but it tastes like cheese! I just hope that they treat their cows nice.

For losing weight, i would recommend avoiding carbohydrates at your night meal. I eat quite a bit during the day because i exercise a lot, but quit at night a few months ago. Boy, has my body fat plummeted--to the point where i'm thinking of changing back. Everyone's body is different, but it makes sense that excess energy is just going to get stored if you go and sleep on it.
Also, please remember that a calorie is a calorie--eat more protein calories than you need, and they will still turn into fat!

The problem with yoghurt is that it is made from animal products. If you bothered to read my post you would see I was recommending an animal product free diet (except fish/tuna).

Sure, you were recommending a diet without animal products. IMHO I happen to think yoghurt is good stuff even though it's (usually) made with an animal product. You make it sound like yoghurt is an evil diet killer and will make you put on 50 kay geez. There's plenty of evidence it's great for losing weight.

Anyway, you can make Caspian Sea Yoghurt with soy milk if that's what you want to do. It's the live part that makes it especially beneficial to the body. I like soy milk, so I will try making it with that next time I get some. I dunno if you can get soy yoghurt in Japan very easily, but you can get soy milk, and by adding the CSY culture you have your animal free yoghurt...

You can get CSY at most department stores for about 900yen. It comes in a tiny freeze dried packet (2 actually, so you could share it with someone) which you add to your soy milk. After that you can continue making it for a year if not more. Like I said, I haven't tried it yet, but it should work with soy milk too.

Unlike most food you get these days, the great thing about CSY is you can make it pretty much free of all additives and sugar. This is a good thing right?

But, I guess you probably don't care about that since you're getting all those nice chemicals smoking your arse off...

The yogurt i recommended is sugar free, but i can see the point about trying eliminating animal products.

The soy milk yogurt sounds good...any tips for making it?

And i don't want to steer this too far off track, but tuna is probably one of the absolute worst foods one can eat for one's health. Because of human activities and natural bioaccumulation processes, they are practically swimming toxic waste dumps. The dioxins and heavy metals can mess with one's endocrine, nervous, and immune systems. I wouldn't recommend women who are thinking of getting pregnant eat tuna or other big predator fish regularly. And most health authorities do not either.

there's no need to get bitchy....I don't disagree with your opinion on yoghurt, I was simply advising the poster of an excellent way to lose weight using a detoxifying diet which consists of eating dairy free/animal free etc etc products

Yoghurt is excellent for balancing your natural intestinal flora but not that great for helping you lose weight...it kinda regulates your bacteria levels...but you could take acidophilus pills for that which have been proved to contain much higher levels of acidophilus and other regulating sources

Kuro_Kitty,
What happens if I don't go off the contraceptive pill while on this diet? Does it make much difference to the weight loss?

yeah, you won't lose as much as the pill tries to protect your organs, especially close to your reproductive organs, and inhibits rapid weight loss. Plus you *might* experience diarohea while detoxing so your pill may be ineffective...(the pill automatically makes *most* women gain a few kilos as women were not *intended* to be thin...women'[s organs are supposed to be *padded* for protection and healthy child bearing abilities

Probably the same as for milk, but substitute soy milk. Check my posts above for a bit of a run-down, and these websites go into lots of detail:

If you want lots of info try this Yoghurt PDF :D

Ask around, someone is bound to be making it or knows someone who's making it. If that fails, get the freeze dried starter culture from a department store or good supermarket. Ask for "Kaspi-kay yoghurt". I think that's how they pronounce it.

The bacteria in CSY are Lactococcus cremoris and Gluconobacter sp. They can grow at room temperature, unlike other yoghurt bacteria which are more temperature sensitive. I've been making CSY for over a year without any problems. It never went off or got contaminated.

If you've got any questions, let us know.

COSTCO has some great Soy Milk. It all comes in bulk. The Silk Chocolate Soy Milk is great. It comes in 18 243ml containers and is great for lunch. Then there is the Silk Vanilla Soy Milk. It's just a little bit sweet and goes down really nice. Comes in 12 1 Litre Packs. I love Soy Milk and go to COSTCO to stock up on it. Good stuff!!!!

If you can't get out to COSTCO you can order it from theflyingpig.com You end up paying a bit more but it's not too bad.
