View Full Version : Please don't do this

OK I see the point of the "Report" button, although I still prefer PMing offenders directly, calling them names and physically threatening them.
But please, please don't do one of these Karma/reputation things where users rate each other with positive and negative feedback. Little green or red dots under your name that are supposed to make you think twice about what you post. Also helps point out trolls. But trolls kind of point themselves out anyway don't they (we)? And even trolls say something good every now and then.
I'm already 12 points in the red over at the Jref forum and I've only made 3 posts! Couple of weeks ago I made a little rebuttal against this 'Japan expert' that happens to be one of the moderators and main contributors, and I didn't even cuss or call him names, pseudointellectual knowitall punk, but BAM...little red dots under my name. Like a scarlet letter -- only it's T for troll.
GP admins, I plead with you. Anarchy is the only way forward.

I have to agree that anarchy is the only way forward. I love that a person can say whatever they want on GP.

My inner nasty wants to report you both.
Where is the 'spurious reporting repercussion' button?
Sorry, this 'report' button seems like a silly idea.

A reputation system would be good as long as it doesn't become the overal determiner in who gets banned. I like having red dots across my face.
It would be interesting to hear feedback from people.

Are you serious? that is so retarded. I can see the point of such things on Ebay where financial transactions are taking place, but I don't think I'd bother with a forum that felt the need for such subjective advertising.

We do NOT need a rating system of dots or squares or whatever. I don't belong to any other forums except this one but I do check the others out from time to time and despite its warts and all, I think GP is still the best. We don't need any rating system that will be a sort of "silent policeman." The beauty of GP is that Admins does seem to be reasonable but more than that, there really is "self policing" system as I would call it in that posters can spot the troll and flamer a mile away and respond back accordingly. So I think that those who post regularly here are really a kind of "firewall" against others that come on here and flame away. Those flamers are soon driven away.
Aha's post is very relevant to the health of GP, I think. Thanks Aha. R.

Where did the OP hear of this development?

I agree with trip_hop. I have no idea what you guys are talking about. Where do I see those dots and squares?.

Aha mentioned that he saw them on the other forum mentioned in his post and so I think he was appealing to Admins NOT to institute the same thing. Correct me if I am wrong, though. R

I can feel the frustration. Try looking at it from a different angle.
People get to evaluate you based off of your merits and what you contribute to GP.
But, again this should never be used to ban people.

I can't see admin here wanting to institute such a system.
It would have been funny though to see how many red dots someone like Morning After would have accumulated.

No, I don't want to put anybody into panic mode. Not here. Nothing but composure for the fine bunch at GaijinPot...
Seriously, I made that post 6 mos ago, around the time the GP admin added the "Report" button and promised more great changes to come. Now I know they were talking about the makeover and new forums we got. And while I did not agree with the new "Report" button at the time, I have actually used it quite frequently (probably 3-400 times on J.T alone).
As for the reputation/karma system, I still don't agree with it. On the Jref forum, for example, even though they have all kinds of technicalities in place to keep it from being abused, I think even more of a cult of personality situation develops, where people give you red dots based not on the importance/appropriateness of your message but rather on how prettily you beg to join their exclusive little circle jerk and punish each other's enemies.
The technical side itself isn't faultless either. At the very least, if GP did it, The ONE would have to verify only one IP per registered user (out of 8,000 and growing). Otherwise what's to stop a troll like arginjapan, who has at least 5 different usernames here, from unfairly but subtly ganging up on a pet chump?
Either way, on Jref, getting bombarded with red dots has consequences -- people like mcalpine get banned... Hey, wait a minute,
The ONE, could we please get a reputation system here? ;)

You were obviously wasting your time reporting me, although I guess it comes back to me calling you an obese seppo. As I have retracted that statement, I would hope that any hostilities cease.
Yours in friendship,
