Is there any site or information repository that I could consult to find out if my specific medication is available in Japan? I am going to Japan in April and I have to take certain prescription medicines for health reasons, how could I find out if I will be able to obtain my medicines in Japan. I was also thinking of joining the National Health Insurance to get coverage for them, does it pay for all medicines that I may need while I am there?
Any help appreciated

Just ask. Some meds, esp. corticosteroids for allergies are not available, or are under different names.
Manufacturer should know, but some do not give out information to general public.
Joining the National health Scheme or a Company Health Programme is compulsory, though few join private plans, if you can afford to pay upfront.

Don't get too worried. You can have your meds sent to you if they are not available here. Talk to your doctor about it before you leave, so you can set up a plan re prescription renewals so a family member or friend can pick up your scrip and send it to you. I think you can get up to three months worth of meds sent at a time, but check with customs first.

1) Why - maybe you do not need it
2) Find another Dr.
3) Any pharmacy in Bangkok will have it if you are over that way.

Most Japanese Drs. will be able it prescribe it here, so do not worry.
In the meantime, get plenty from the UK then until you can find a Dr. here.
It is possible to get a private presription from a UK Dr., just find one who will give you it.
Bring a copy of your prescription with you for customs.
