OK, let's see if someone can help -- Person has a bit of a problem.

I've often heard it said that someone's koseki is public information. If so, how does one go about getting information from somone's koseki? Where do you go? Do you tell them the person's place of birth or where they live now?

The reason I want/need this information is fairly important. I need to contact someone in an official capacity (meaning, regarding a legal matter). If I know someone's first and last name, where they were born, where they live now (I think), and lots of other information (uni, job now, etc.) is it possible to get this information?

Please advise if you would.

Thanks --

Dear Person..

They have just changed or are about to change
the law regarding getting this information. Coz the info previously available has been abused, you have to have a bloody good reason nowadays why you want it, or be family..

Get down the local ward office, you can check what areas it covers. Hows your Japanese.
The scary part is they can also provide you with a map of the area, with the name of every household in that district. When I went there, the guy was handing them out like tissues as they are bordered with local biz ads...
So much for privacy..

Alternately, you said you think you know where they live. Why not visit them, if necessary pack a baseball bat..!

Good hunting...

You would have to go to their registeredd ward office, city office and talk to some official. But more than likely you`d be refused. Before years ago, it was possible but not now. It is a private thing.

actually not so difficult to do.....
sorry guys...

if you know the persons local ward, their address... how to write their name etc properly AND their honseki....
and have a 100yen stamp of their name... (and a japanese person to go and do it for you) it will cost you like 300 yen

to get their honseki... sneak a peak at their drivers license... it should be written there.

i had someone go and get my ex's koseki the other day cuz i was curious as to whether he had taken my son off or not...

piece of cake.

Thanks everyone for the replies; Eku, I sent you a pm.

What I need is -- someone's home address. I want to send something to their home address.

I only know the city (Otsu). I have no idea what ward.

I have the person's name (of course), date of birth, job information, and that's about it.

Is there some sort of yellow pages? Perhaps the person is listed? I can't read Japanese but I suppose I could match up the kanji for the person's name.

It's fairly important. Any ideas?

Yellow Pages only lists companies. The NTT white Pages will list household addresses but you still need to know their address. If you know the Kanji it may be OK but there could be 50 Suzukis in the listing. The address will show the ward and banchi of the address.

Is there someplace to get the white pages for outside your area? I live in Nagoya, as many know. The perons lives in Otsu. Luckily, the last name is rather...uncommon I think.
