Yokohama is a city of 3.5 million people, and at least a few thousand hostess clubs (if you include snacks). Foreigners don't generally go to hostess clubs with much frequency, so I would doubt that you will find someone here who knows it, although you may luck out.

Yokohama is a great city. Big, lots of green, and close enough to Tokyo that you can go there and have fun, but don't actually have to live there.

Remember how I said there were thousands of hostess bars in Yokohama? Well multiply that by about 5 for Tokyo. I really doubt you are gonna find someone who knows these clubs.

ozgal - from a fellow Aussie (I`m a bloke), here`s some good advice. Be very careful about hostessing jobs.

It doesn`t matter whether you`re intending to sleep with your customers or not, in many hostess places it`s assumed that you`re going to have `dates` with customers. For `dates` read `sex`. More money for the club that way.

Most if not all these clubs are owned by people who are either members of Japan`s organised crime gangs (collectively lumped together under the title Yakuza) or have close ties to them. They have ____ respect for women, they just want you to make money for them. Fine if it`s just talking to and massaging the egos of your customers but not for nothing are these clubs regarded as part of the `Mizu shobai` - the water trade or to put it bluntly, the sex industry.

There is no hostess visa. What kind of visa are you being offered? It`s unlikely you`ll get a contract. Be really careful. Immigration has cracked down on hostesses over the past few years - if anything gets out of hand you`ll be blamed, not your boss, and you`ll be out of Japan faster than you can say `Giz a fair go!` Probably with no money.

The case of that English woman Lucy who was murdered by a customer made headlines outside of Japan mostly about 6 years ago. She went with him to his house, on a date. Time mag had an article but was careful to not say she was going to be paid for sex with him. If you took the article at face value you`d think all Lucy intended was to have dinner with him. Despite all the ____ about her being naive I don`t think she was - those dates mean one thing. Sex with the paying customer. You`re a call girl if you do that.

Being a hostess means walking the fine line between sleeping with a customer too soon, or too late. If you do it too soon, he won't come back. If you wait too long, well, he won't come back.

Its a basic history of hostessing, how it came about, what it involves etc. I actually found it to be very informative, and I actually came to understand what the hostess trade was all about.

Anyways, you dont HAVE to sleep with the customers (at most places) but it happens lots.

Also, if they try to make you give them your passport at any time, DONT GIVE IT TO THEM. You can guarantee that you will end up being made to have sex with your customers. You are best to walk away, and go back to Australia with nothing than to give them your passport.

Let me first say I have massive sympathy for Lucie Blackman. But it was the first publicity we had in the West about hostessing and people are still mis-informed. Lucie Blackman was a hostess not a prostitute, She worked in what is now Greengrass which is a hostess bar.

As you said, do be careful with the Yakusa. Don't try to f**k with them of course. You do have to give the club your passport to photocopy in any case, all the clubs I was interviewed for and worked at did this. Jesus no, don't let them keep it! If they were to inform the authorities on you they would be in trouble too.

I think I know one girl EVER on the hostessing scene (and I mean proper hostessing, not as a euphemism for anything else) who was RUMOURED to be a prostitute.

Contrary to what Robred believes girls can and do go out with customers and just talk. I knew some girls who did it because they like the customers. I did it a couple of times because I wanted the bloke to become my dohan. I wouldn't advocate doing this as they can be playing the game too and don't want to pay dohan money to the hostess club. If a bloke becomes sleazy or you feel uncomfortable don't see him again.

Yes,they say stuff like "Oh, I want you to be my girlfriend" but you can just laugh it off and continue having them as dohans and as your commission.

Yes, some clubs make you have dohan as part of the job, but you go for dinner and then straight to the club. I always made sure I went for dinner locally and never got into a car. Then you take them to your club.

There is no parallel in the West for hostessing and I think that is why so many Westerners with no direct experience of hostessing think that it must be prostitution.

Japanese men have always paid women to talk to them, it's not so much of a stigma.

Of course they want to have sex but they don't expect to get it. Someone once said to me that if customers want sex they will just go to a prostitute. Or if they want to fondle you they will go to a strip bar.They abound in Roppongi after all.

Fujay... Sometimes they will lose interest after a bit and then you have to find another dohan. If a girl is earning a good wage why would she accept money to sleep with some revolting elderly man? I only met one customer once who sort of, um, in a round about, um, Japanese way asked me to go for a weekend away with him. I said I couldn't possibly as I was such a nice little girl. That was more or less the end of it.

Also some hostess clubs chuck you out for sleeping with customers because then when they get what they want they don't come back. Also of course it's illegal, and hostess clubs don't want to be seen as brothels because the more "respectable" businessmen would be put off.

You actually raise an interesting point here: where do we draw the line between what behaviour constitutes a prostitute and what doesn't?

I mean, what about the woman who marries a bloke just because he has a stable job and a good income and in return lets him shag her once or twice a week? She no longer needs to work herself, does a few household chores which have gotten way easier in recent times with the progress of modern technology, and can then spend a portion of his income on her own interests and desires. I'm pretty sure there are tons of marriages like this around the world... Are these women essentially whores (because they are financially dependent on a man) or something else? Discuss!
