To any web programmers out there:
I'm trying to build web pages in HTML..no problems linking to other websites or images on the web, but when I try to make links to pictures or images that I have in my hard drive, I get a little red X in the middle of a small box, but no picture. I've made sure the image is in the same directory as the HTML file, I've tried typing in the whole path..but still no luck. Does it have anything to do with Japanese computers using the \ sign instead of the reverse of /? Any ideas welcome and appreciated.

make a folder (yellow thingie) and stick your html doc and the piccies in the same folder
or make a folder for the html and a sub folder (called images of course) for the images and ref all your images to that
they have to live in the same yellow thingie to get along

Where are you hosting your webpage?
You basicly have 2 choices for hosting.
1. Off-site
2. Locally
1 - If you're hosting your ____ offsite, then you have to upload your pictures and make what is called a relative reference to the pictures.
relative reference looks like this:
img src="images/mypics/me.jpg"
If you want to go down a directory from where the current webpage is and then up to your images you do this:
img src="../images/mypics/me.jpg"
2 - If you host locally that means you have turned your computer into a webserver (Not recommended for security reasons which Eku can explain). When you host locally you can use a static reference, like the full path of your harddrive(Still you should use relative paths, but it is possible to plant a static path down):
img src="C:\\webroot\MyPage\images\mypics\me.jpg"
If you were around during the DOS days, then you would know paths like the veins on your weener. If not, then it takes some getting used to, but try looking at other sites and how their images are set up and you should pick it up pretty quick.
:o i didnt even realise until now that his page was on the web and the piccies on his box...
i mean it never crossed my mind...
ps please turn your pc into a server ... and be sure to buy lots of HDD... :D then send a link to your page ...
my pc is getting full. :D

You can also check the path on either the URL address at the top or the status menu at the bottom of most browsers.

First off there is a world of difference between a forward and a backward slash. One is used in DOS/Windoze, the other is used in *nix varients.
Now, as to why you can't get your pics to post could be several reasons.
First is, if you are seeing the red X it means that you have set up the HTML code to display a pic there, but it simply can't find it. The reasons for this could be two-fold.
The first is the pic simply isn't where you say it is, or where the code is looking. The second is you simply don't have the rights to access that pic.
A good resource is Webmonkey.com. It's chock full of useful information in how HTML works, how to code and other stuff.

Damn Trippy, that's been a long time.
I still remember having to create two Config.sys file just so I could play DOOM on my crappy 486 with only 4MB of RAM.
Ah memories.... :)

Kumachan - then can you imagine an 8086! Advanced CGA graphics and the world of extended RAM, anything to beat the 640kb limit. I still have a functioning **386 with DOS 3.0J, 5.25" FDD and Word 4, just before it became bloatware - those were the days! But they gave you an excellent grounding.

I know a guy that cut his teeth programming on an 8086. But then I also remember punch cards...
My first computer was a Commodore Vic-20, with a whopping 16K of memory. I moved up to the Commodore 64 which had a huge 64K. I actually used that for a long time until the RS-232 port died completely and I bought my first PC.

jacques from my somewhat limited experience using html I would suggest you try the following.
use permutation and combination, they are your friends. Change the location of the photo then change the html call. See if that works. try changing the name of the folder see if that works.
I built my own websites over the years and occasionally had the same problems, but by tweaking poking and prodding I was able to get it to work.
are you following a proven technique or are you experimenting with it ?
I still remember my old 386 and having to load the floppy executables everytime. Ah the old days playing reach for the stars !

Thanks for all the useful advice folks..I'll try it tonight when I get home. The site isn't actually on any server, I've just started a course on web programming and I'm working thru the basics. For some reason I'm stuck on one small point - how to either link or attach an image that's on my hard drive to a webpage. Linking or attaching an image from the 'net is no problem. Weird. Guess it's all about perseverance. Thx again.

As long as we're eulogizing our old comps:
TRS-80 used to play Empire! on it. Still the best game ever.
Atari 800XL: had a cartridge port for games and an external 5.25" floppy drive
Commodore 128: Pirates! Used to play that game until my eyes bled.
80286 8 Mhz with a 2MB Ramboard and 20MB Harddrive and monochrome monitor. Spent endless hours trying to troubleshoot a dead motherboard battery.
80386 25 Mhz, 4 MB RAM 80MB Hd and VGA monitor. Could finally see grainy porn by d/l'ing it from a local BBS at 2400 baud, yeah! Doom still required smoke and mirrors to play.
From there, 486's and Pentiums through each iteration.
my first computer required a cassette tape to boot... you could also save data to tapes... no FDD no nuttink... just if this was that then go to there.... :D
you could play breaking down the wall or space invaders if you felt like typing out the program first... :o

Wonder if anyone used mainframes? Back in the 70s, Spectra mainframe - size of 2 container trucks, with a 3rd for the a/c unit. Client units were the size of a large office desk, with a light pen to operate them, 99% was choosing pre-programmed options, the keyboard was for establishing privileges when you logged on, and a little custom programming. Crashed about 3-4 times a day, took half an hour or so to come back on line! No such thing as Ctrl-Alt-Del!
As we all start to sound like 4 Yorkshiremen, has anyone used an old electric soroban?

Could it be that for some reason my browser (IE) either doesn't accept images, or I haven't enabled it to accept images? When I 'alt="text"' to the code I get 'text' appearing in the box where the image should be..am I wrong in wondering whether or not I should fiddle with the browser?

eku, if you were in front of me right now, I'd plant a big wet smacker right on your tobacco-scented lips. Followed a few links from the site you suggested above, and apparently it was an image size problem. Fixed in a jif. Thanks to all for the advice and encouragement.
