A friend of mine has been travelling in Japan for the last 2 months. He wants to get another 3 mth tourist visa. Will Immigration give him any hassles on a return from a wekend in Korea? He is financially OKa and has a return ticket to his home country of Australia.
Cheers,

If you have the return ticket and act and dress nicely, there should be no problems.

No worries. Korea will be fun as well, nothing better than a korean barbecue.

actually i heard this was no problem in the past, but since
everyone began abusing this method to stay in japan for longer periods lately, they now turn away such people.

i asked the japanese embassy in my country about it and
they also said that one should return to his/her home
country for a few months before going to japan again on a
tourist visa. i guess it probably depends on your home
country how strict the authorities are going to be about it.

A few years ago (2002) I was stopped at Narita after going to Korea for five days and reentering Japan. I was attending language school at the time and was coming back for a second term, I had applied for a student visa but it was taking some time to process. I had a certificate from my school stating that I would be attending classes and had paid tuition in full. The immigration officer pulled me aside after looking at my passport and he reprimanded me in English about entering Japan twice on a tourist visa and asked me why I had come back so soon. I showed him the documents from school, then he started speaking to me in Japanese, he pointed to some kanji on a list of entry permits and visas and asked me if I could read it, I said, "Yes, it says student visa." He asked me why I didn't have a student visa and I explained that I had applied for one but it had not gone through yet. He firmly told me that the next time I enter Japan I had better have a student visa.

Had I not had the documents from school on me I think I would have had a serious problem. The school had warned me that there we no guarantees on reentry. So just make sure that your friend carries the return ticket back to Australia with him as he goes through immigration and he should be ok.

By the way I'm from the US.

I'm British. I went to Seoul in January to get another 90-day tourist visa and came back in with no probs at all. Mind you, I did get a nice immigraton man on the desk and did a bit of a sweet giggly girly act. I said I was here to visit my boyfriend and that he was looking after me financially.

Thankgoodness I now have a working visa. I doubt I would have made it if I had tried to do it a second time....
