I need to buy tickets for an overnight bus between Shinjuku and Kobe. A bit confused by the range of prices- JR's New Dream Kobe costs 8690yen, while their Seishun Dream Kobe is 5000yen. There is also Night Bus http://www.nightbus.info/ourservice.htm which arranges tickets for 4800yen.
Why the big price difference? Is the New Dream really that much better (3690yen better, to be exact) than the Seishun Dream? Is Night Bus an actual bus line or does it just arrange tickets?

If anyone can help sort it out for me, I'd be grateful.

Don't know about Night bus, but I get the impression that the service only arranges discount overnight bus tickets.
Aside from regular provision such as a washing room, JR New Dream Kobe provides more luxuries -- 3 independent seats in a row, instead of the conventional 4 seats, blanket, leg and foot rest, a pair of slippers, and a reading light, and sometimes the bus comes in double decker. As the name implies, Seishun Dream Kobe is for young people, whose priority is money, rather than comfort.

Thanks for the information... you answered my questions about where to find Night Bus information before I could even ask... :)

Good GOEN... :)

Well, if you do use a night bus please let us know how it turns out.
And a belated thanks for the info, Kika.

I've used a night bus between Nagoya and Tokyo-eki. One word. Cramped. I'm pretty small by Western standards, but I had a hard time getting comfortable. If you have trouble sleeping on planes, sleeping on a night bus is even worse. If you don't, just make sure you get a seat in the back away from emergency lights. My seat was right in front of an emergency exit sign that made it pretty difficult for me to catch any z's (I need it to be relatively dark, call me picky).

The ride itself was smooth, and the bus stopped a few times to let those unable to sleep get some stretching time. As for me.. next time I'd probably shell out 5000en for a shinkansen ticket and more rest.
