I just ate an umeboshi and it felt like I drank a cup of shoyu--I can't get the taste of salt out of my mouth. Can you die from one umeboshi? I mean, is it possible for one umeboshi to absorb enough salt to present the same kind of danger that you would be in from drinking a cup of shoyu?

I'm just interested that I don't die right now--I've already had three glasses of water to try and counter the effects.

ズッコン バッコン is the onomatopoeic Japanese for: "the sound of sex." Say it out loud in a bar a couple of times and see what kind of reaction you get.

Hey there Mr. Hijinx:
Well despite other posters repsonse, umeboshi are prepared in many and varied ways. And salt is definitely one of those ways where a lot is used to the exclusion of any other additives. They really sort of "pucker up" your mouth after you've had one of those babies...But then there are umeboshi made with honey and are very nice, not sweet but only with a hint of sweetness with a little salt. I do not know the % of one ingredient to the other. But IF you have high blood pressure, I would avoid eating those super salty umeboshi. They won't kill you but it could send the blood pressure off the chart - just somethingt keep in mind.

BUT umeboshi are alkaline and so that is the good part to this conversation. For what it's worth. R.

I've had a great many umeboshi in my tenure here in Japan, but this homemade one from my aunt-in-law is the worst and by way far the saltiest I've ever eaten of the hundreds to date. I just didn't think it was possible for one to absorb so much salt.

Contrary to a popular belief I never thought traditional style umeboshi was a healthy food. Yes, alikali could be good for you but the salt content defeats it's purpose. Strong acid and salt can be harmful to your stomack linning. But like Richard said newer kind with less salt and honey taste much better and healthier. Try making onigiri with that and Kankoku nori. Yummy!!.:D
