I'm coming over to Tokyo pretty soon and I want to buy a minidisc, is it cheaper in the UK or Tokyo, I'd appreciate some advise before I buy.

Recordable? A portable? A stero combo? Just the minidisc media? What kind?

Don't think Harvey can answer this one from downtown Indiana! Sony Model numbers can also be different here. New MD Walkmans are around 35,000 - 40,000 JPYen, depending on where you buy them. Downtown discount stores are cheaper than duty free (try Bic Camera, Wattman, Yodobashi Camera, Sato Musen, Joshin) Better to buy an extra battery (15 hours - 4-5,000Yen) and separate portable quick charger (2,500Yen). Sony also use a proprietary headphone connector that no-one else use, (triple ring instead of mini-jack) so if you have a set of cans that you like, or want to use an extension cord, you'll need that too.(800Yen)

Well, where, I am Mini Disc recorders (which is the only one I would get) cost on average of
25,000 yen which is not too bad But I just got mine, Shipped from the States, on Saturday.
Its a Sony MZC500 or something like that. Yellow, very cool and nice and small. With PC link all for $90US on the internet. Shipping was about 10 dollars.

I looked for over a year for a cheap one here but finally found this on the Net and decided enough is enough and bought it right away. For some reason, many electronics are cheaper in Canada and the States. My Minolta camera which cost me about $250 on sale in Canada was found to cost 45,000 yen here. Crazy.

TH is always there to put me in my place :b

Well, from Indiana, I say say, with vauge accuracy, that two years ago, in 'some store in Nagoya', I got 'what was then' the 'smallest' recording portable MD walkman by Panasonic for 4mon (40,000).

If you get one in the UK, you might need to bring along a power converter as to not mess up your rechargeable batteries if it uses them.

As I'd guessed, though, it's cheaper in the states.

I have a 5 MD and 5 CD stereo/radio shelf unit, Sony. I bought the closeout from Crutchfield. I'd like an MD recording walkman that can record in the ORIGINAL format so it can play on my old stereo. If they all do, I guess that buying an MD here would be best.

japan is very expensive....i saw in osaka...Yodobashi Camera....many kind of MD minidisc (record and play) of SONY 19,000yen to 27,000yen
i think that 35,000 or 40,000 is very expensive to buy a MD player recordable. there are many kind of MD very small but i never see price 40,000yen!! its expensive maybe in Tokyo can buy to 40,000yen because Tokyo is more expensive then Osaka.

Cheers
