Australia continues to show it's determination to play a leadership role in regional backwaters and holiday spots.

John Howard has rejected a request from Fiji's PM for military intervention. The Fiji PM has also just said that he never made the request, but John Howard did publicly reject it anyway.

He said:
"In reality, if military action were taken now we'd be, in effect, invading the country and we have absolutely no intention of doing that."

Meanwhile Mr Downer has called the coup "disgraceful" and is planning to implement measures that would prevent the instigators and their immediate families from visiting Australia.

Asked to comment on the likely impact this would have on the Australian Tourist Industry he said that there would be some measureable impact adding that "there are times when action in the international circus requires citizens of the free-world to bear certain measureable indeterminable costs.

Australia has the support of the other regional main-player - New Zealand.

No cricket on today.
