Where are you at?
I'll be in Tokyo in mid-March.
In Chubu, around Nagoya.
Prolly not a good time for me to play but. So, you into drone/shoegazer/post-metal too?
ilovemystrat

Definitely into Metal. I watch Metalocalypse!
But I play the blues at the moment. Just feels right.
Know any good blues songs I should learn?
*falls over*
I have an old acoustic, but I can't play it yet

You should ask Jesus! I think he told me that he'd played with Joel Strummer once.

I like the way fenders hang, but my fingers dong agree with most US models.
i'm by no means Yngvie.. Yngvay... Yngveigh... (sp?)... I can't even spell it!
my main interests are fuzz distorion ala pumpkins as far as rock.
real broad tastes though... and i enjoy non-guitar music.

shinbashi or ginza, used to be almost monthly, now just occasionally, and some CM work. Previous post was a 57 model, this is the 76. Both with soft V-shape maple necks, also have a third 94 model with the modern baseball bat U-neck, very fast but tiring to play.

This is my main live rig. The guitar is an Ibanez Talman, a Jaguar/Jazzmaster like guitar that Ibanez doesn't make anymore. A very nice gat, well balanced, good wood (alder), great pick-ups (P-90s). Sounds like a Jag, plays like a Strat.

Here are my other guitars. I love Fender Strats too. I use the Strat a little for recording and it my back up guitar live but I prefer the Talman live as it has a little more "balls" (P-90 pickups).
Also there is a Fender Jazz bass and a Burney ES-335 copy.
nowhere near you guys...
slack string bottleneck on an old yamaha accoustic..

My babies......
1980 Flying-V (original Dirty Fingers PU's)...nicknamed Veronica
1990 Strat with Lindy Fralins...nicknamed Marilyn (has a custom-made pickguard I had made in Atlanta)
1968 Les Paul Standard.....nicknamed Lara after this Beeyotch I use to know.....because LP's are a Beeyotch to get worked on...got the frets dressed and the neck heat pressed....$600......SHEESH!
1962 Tele....no nickname.....
All pushed through a 1965 Blackface Fender Deluxe Reverb.....
I'm sad because I had to leave all my gear in the States......all that old wood is sitting under my sisters bed......:(

A real Gibson ES-335? If so, sweet.
ES-335 are great but generally underated guitars. Like Strats they can do pretty much anything, save the heaviest of metal. They cost a fortune these days but are worth every yen IMO. You can't say that about all pricey guitars.

I was in the same boat. I bought one guitar over, the rest I left back home. I still own a Les Paul and a Mesa Boogie amp but I basically gave them to my brother (who's also a muso) because it's cheaper to buy new gear here than it is to ship it over....

Put some Fender Custom Shop PU's on that bad boy....trust me.....you can get LP crunch, sustain and distortion......
The thing I like about Strats is that you can make a Strat sound like an LP........but you cannot make an LP sound like a Strat.....

oh, the strat i brought home from japan is coming back with me to japan!
no way am i leaving at home!
Some serious axe tax been paid on some of those!
I've got an Ibanez RG 365. Bought it way back when my musical interests were a little different (ie. jumbo frets, floyd rose). Recently been thinking about buying a cheap japanese tele mainly for the convenience of a fixed bridge and I wanna be like Keith Richards.

I have wandered into the local Hard Off's....actually have seen some decent wood at not bad prices.......might want to try them....
Saw a 2000 Tele...American made.....with the current conversion rate...it was about $300....give or take....
Strat: Axe tax is money spent on your babies.....case in point....my V goes for about 3K these days....I don't even want to know what my Tele would go for (not that it's for sale....)

my man, its call G.A.S.; GEAR ACQUISTION SYNDROME.
don't worry, it happens and there's no cure.
i'm pretty happy with my japanese strat, the next guitar i buy will have to be a custom/super high end model!

I used to have bad G.A.S. :) It's not so bad now.
None of my guitars are super expensive but they are good enough and get the job done. A good mid-range guitar can be much better value than a high end Fender USA or Gibson IMO (Fender Japan or Ibanez for example).
I used to own tons of effects but playing live and harassment from my band mates (and my fiancee) have made me cut down. I now "only" have 6 pedals on my pedalboard, though that includes a tuner, EQ and a volume pedal which I don't think really count as "effects".
Every since I got my Vox AC30 head I've been pretty happy with what I have. It's a really nice amp. However there is that Fender Jaguar Special I played the other day...
About twenty years ago I asked a friend of mine Dave Graef, who is now a world-class guitar tech, to help me put together an electric guitar. I've been playing this same axe since then. Two EMG 85s and a SA in the middle, with a booster circuit; it can scream like a bat out of hell, or whisper like a breeze. Dave's recommendation for the tremolo then was Washburn Wonderbar (and no, its not Wonderbra) and it worked wonder untill last year when the locking nut for the high E string broke. Currently I am looking for a good luthier who can install a Floyd Rose-type nut in a clean precise manner...
I use Lexicon MPX G2 guitar effects processor. I can hook it up straight into the mixer/snake, or place it in a tube amp's effects loop. It has saved my butt too many times in the past.

I've got an Ibanez SAS32FM, I love it but I can't play it for ____. I got it when i was in a (with hindsight ____) band at uni. I've got a Yamaha electric/acoustic which is my passion. I thought going from acoustic to electric would be easier but i really struggled. I'm saving up for a loop pedal. Anyone use one? Recommendations? Also, I'm coming to Hamamatsu (i know it's massive) don't know where yet but I'll be desperate to jam with anyone when I get there.

I'm saving up for a loop pedal. Anyone use one? Recommendations? Just ordered a Digitech JamMan (http://www.digitech.com/products/JamMan/JamMan.htm), because of its versatility in inputs and outputs and the up to 2GB compact flash card slot. Here at the local Ishibashi it costs about 4Man including the optional foot controller. Will pick it up as soon as it arrives. Can give you my first impressions of it in about a week or so, if you want.

Of that's cool! Unfortunately, I've been out of the loop cuz here in Arizona the music scene... well there really isn't one. In Hiroshima, the square milage is smaller but the population is the same as Phoenix, Arizona. But i could walk down the street and find a studio and guitar shop! and in the downtown area 10 mins by bike 5 guitar stores, all within 5 minutes walking distance!
But, I'll be in Tokyo in about 6 weeks... My mind is gonna explode!
I'm looking at the Zoom multi-effects thing with the 2 expression pedals. Hopefully, it'll be the all-in-one effector for me!
I really need a good amp now... I'm stuck with a roland mirco cube thing...

For multi effects, the Vox ToneLabs, PODs and Boss GT-6s are good, or if you are going cheaper, Korg make some good stuff too.
I have a Korg AX1500G which I use at home (with headphones) which is great since it has a amp & cab simulator so I can practise at home without bothering the oba-chun next door.

Time to let the led out. Jimmy Page is on the stage.
All the best.

Ishibashi music has a lot of Strats. They are the offical Fender Japan dealer for shipping overseas too. There's one in Ochanomizu but the are others all around Japan too,

Ishibashi like every other store have Gibsons too (and Ibanez, PRS, Epiphone, etc, etc) just they tend to have a bigger selection of Fenders than other stores.
I'm not sure which shop if any is a Gibson specialist. Shimamura Music seems to have quite a few. Gibsons are expensive (as much as elsewhere) in Japan though since they are US made, where as Fender Japan (not Fender USA) is very affordable

84 Ashwood Japan Fender strat E series based on 54 Ashwood Fender US, then remodelled to be an exact copy of Eric Clapton's blackie, complete with scratches and cigarette burn. Pickups are US made.
Incredibly light!
I also played on the exact original of Eric Clapton's 1944 Martin, bought at Christie's in London for almost 500,000 dollars. Aparently it was the first guitar he ever had, and the smell of the wood was incredible - so sweet!

Only famous guitar I got my hands on was one of George Benson's old school guitars (semi hollow but acoustic-size, pickups had just been invented and amps for them weren't so good).
My guitar teacher's friend (who was also a guitar) met George Benson, but he thought Benson was white and shook the white guy's hand instead. He totally felt like an ___!

Hi JayJay,
I just bought one of these and started mucking about with it, but got a long way to go to work it all out. Like you said, it sounds great through headphones, but I haven't worked out if it will be any good live. The sounds I got in the rehearsal studio sounded tinny. Do you play it without the amp or cab simulator on?

I don't use it live, only at home. However if I did I would turn the amp sim off if it was going through a decent amp.

live and learn, don't become a grad student, you'll have to hock your guitars!
