Maybe it's just me, but what the hell is up with the gaggle of assorted Gaijin girls who sit behind Shingo and his guests on his TV show?
There are about 30 of them, and their sole purpose seems to be sitting there and listening to the dialogue as translation...all the while making supposedly "cute" faces and exagerrated responses to whatever Shingo says. BIG SMILE!! LAUGH!! ____ HEAD TO ONE SIDE AND TRY AND LOOK PENSIVE!!!
It's really funny...they actually try and emulate what they imagine to be a typical young Japanese woman's mannerisms. Has anyone else noticed this???

That show is wacky...aside from the strange girls, the announcer is the same dude who used to play the Dad/Japanese teacher on the old NHK Nihongo program.
I've noticed those girls too, but I imagine they get a paid a lot of money to act that way. Like some of the male gaijin clowns on TV...
I actually thought perhaps they may be Russians. Russians seem popular these days in Tokyo, at least. I think it's because they have the "white looks" that some Japanese like, but less on the feminist side. :-)
By the way, Westsan, thanks for your positive comments on gaijin women. I hope you are enjoying yourself with your "vast improvement"-a lemon with no motivation, I think you called her?

Nope. I belong to that agency and according to recent email offers the fee is now down to 4000yen plus transportation.
It used to be higher and all they took a wider variety of people (ie; age and attractiveness were not important factors) and all they had to do was just stand around and react in an upbeat but relatively natural way. I can't believe how wierd those girls are willing to act now for such a small amount of yen. They really creap me out so I can't watch that show anymore (not that I miss it or anything..).
Smallword, please can you tell me how to apply for participation in that program? Please, I want to help a friend of mine!

What's your email address? I'll send you the info. There are TONNES of agencies that accept foreigners though, so if your friend wants that kind of work he/she should join several, not just this one.

Shan, I meant BOTH men and women...it's just that the gals are the ones featured most prominently.
Related to that, have you ever noticed how many famous Gaijin dudes on TV look and/or act either:
1) Full-on gay
2) really "dumbed-down"
3) hyperactive
4) all of the above

Yes, I know. I participate in the show, but I am not on stage. I cheer for Shingo during the Bera Bera Station section. They do not really serve any purpose but to sit there and squeal at surprising information, EHHHHH!!!

Perhaps this is Japanese TV and Movie Industry's way at getting back at all the Western sterotyped Japanese tourists stupidly taking pictures of ridiculous things in many movies over the years?

Plus, why does Shingo still really suck at English?? The guy lives in Tokyo for God's sake, stars in and English show, and could have his pick of English-speaking Gaijin gals...?????

Not that it's exactly related but I did see a picture of him in a nice pink dress, I thought it was just his "Shingo MAMA" phase.

The Shingo used to be fat (ridiculously called, as per Japanese society standards), but boy isnt he a little ball of delight these days. But why is The Ugly One the most popular member of SMAP?

Mikey, call the ugly guys the 'leader', I guess as a way to even things out. Check out Tokio as well- some very fine specimens with a homely leader.

I'm not sure that I wish I could say I knew who the leader of smap is. Is it the skinny guy who speaks Korean? He seems pretty cool. In fact, watching those guys on tv was the only thing that made me know anything about smap. I don't follow Za J-pops very much.

SMAP (Sports Music Assemble People) Nakai Masahiro, Kimura Takuya (Kimutaku for short), Katori Shingo, Kusanagi Tsuyoshi and Inagaki Goro
Kimura had the highest profile in the past, and is often considered the leader, probably after he was the first one to appear in trendy dramas on TV. Collectively and individually they are all weak singers. The average Asian karaoke hostess with a sore throat is louder than all of them put together.
He is filming at Shin-Yokohama on weekdays, and has dozens of young and middle-aged women fans waiting for hours and then screaming for him everytime he appears. His wife is currently advertising cars on TV.
Personally, I find Chage and Aska better performers and singers, though Aska seems to live in London now. They are also much better live.

Actally, Nakai Masahiro is the leader. It goes by age. Nakai is 3 or 4 months older than Kimura. Although, Kimura is definitely the sexiest. Kusanagi, the guy who speaks Korean, is not my favorite, but his acting is quite good. I enjoy watching his dramas and movies. The one who is the most popular changes all the time throughout each year it seems.

Nakai is definitely one bug-eyed, goofy looking dude...how in the hell did any of those guys ever become famous??!! It's simply amazing how no one in SMAP can actually sing well at all...kind of like a Japanese version of "Menudo" (if anyone from N. America still remembers them)
As for the rumors about their (bi?) sexuality, isn't it common for any of these young lads to be "interviewed" (ie, buggered) by some old sukebe manager as payment for years of fame and fortune? I have heard that the whole "Johnny's Junior" operation is a way for horny old pervs to produce, and thus molest, ever-new and younger versions of the same basic ike-men "boy-band" formula.
How much is that worth to you, young man....??!!

Well we can all certainly remember Menudo's more recent clones, like New Kids on The Block, Backstreet Boys, Nsync etc.
There is a difference between the manufactured boy bands of the west and those of Japan, though. In the west the members are just pretty faces with a few dance moves and perhaps half-decent voices, while in Japan they are all of those, plus actors, comedians, athletes, cooks, educators- basically charming, hard-working, all-purpose entertainers. Love them or not, the boys from SMAP, Tokio, V6 etc. are all constantly on TV, doing a (usually) good job of entertaining us.
I agree with Mikey about Shingo- he's great! Not so much becuase he's goodlooking or sexy (Kimutaku beats him on both counts) but because he's such a charmer.
But I'll take Tokio's Matsuoka over Shingo any day!

I have to agree with smallworld, on several points. SMAP and the like have their place. Maybe I am just biased becaused I love SMAP too, but they must be doing a good job because they have caught the attention of foreingers world wide. The fan base in places like Taiwan, Malaysia, and HK is huge.
I think some poeople on this forum are trying to compare the Japanese entertainers with those from Hollywood. It does not work and personally, I would take any SMAP show over watching a harem of women fight over who will win the heart of Bob the Bachelor.
