slake is being sarcastic. Of course there are black people in Japan. And Latinos/Hispanics. And, Middle Easterners. And many nationalities. Whites are in the minority of minorities.

So like, dude, are you like from the states or what?

I was asked a similar question the other day. A lady from the US asked me if there are many quote "African Americans" in japan. I said not many in this area, Kansai, but there are more in Tokyo I think.

I guess that Japanese tend to show more favour to the white people which means they are more likely to become spread around the country and generally more obvious. Other groups are not so lucky it would seem and so tend to congrigate in more select areas. Would I be right? wrong?

I think that in any given year, I would probably see no more than about 10 black (for use of a better word) people if I am lucky.

Shokutaku,

You wrote, "I think that in any given year, I would probably see no more than about 10 black (for use of a better word) people if I am lucky."

So, are you saying that you're lucky that you didn't have to encounter more than 10 Black people in a year?

You also wrote, "(for use of a better word)" Did you mean to write 'for lack of a better word?' Are you an English "teacher?" I hope not.

Steamboat

Thank you for pointing out my errors

I was tired when wrote this and obviously made some mistakes.

I meant to say that I would probably not see more than 10 black people in a year meaning they are very scarce where I live. If I see more than 10 I am lucky. Sorry for the mistake.

and yes, for "want" of a better word is better, thank you Kaitrina.
I have a problem with categorising people by colour.

BTW Steamboat. No I am not an English teacher, but thank you for asking so .......politely... I really appreciated you tack. Do you use it in class? I hope not

I live near Yokosuka, and see lots of types of people. At work, I see people from different racial backgrounds every day.

I`m bad at counting, but I see my Jamaican co-worker at least 6 times a day. My Barbadian co-worker moved to Canada a while ago, so I only hear from her... maybe twice a month. An African-American co-worker just transferred to another branch, so I only see her at big parties...

Anyways, I usually call these people by name, and categorize them by whether or not I like them...

Not by race/origin....

Um, do you have a particular reason for asking?

I usually see many black people in Shinjuku, Shibuya and Roppongi, advertising for various forms of entertainment... there's also a few service people around Tokyo. They're definitely around, though. You'll probably find black people wherever you'll tend to find any foreigners.

And I think Steamboat got shot down.

I kinda wondered the same thing. I live in a gaijin house and have met an African guy from Cameroon and a Jamaican dude. We are here and spread across the country. Right now I'm in southern Osaka and I have seen 3 folks of color. There is supposed to be a group of folks that get together but the website has not been updated. Did you know that one of english schools, though small but highly profitable is owned by a brother from California. Anywho, I'm outta here.

Is it just me, or is the original question one of the most inane F'in pieces of moronism to emerge on this site in the last little while?

So Kaitrina are you stupid or what ? What exactly did you mean by this mother of all stupid questions ? Explain yourself.
Only beaten by that guy who wanted to get a bride to take back to Austin and of course a lot of my posts,

Rodney,
I apologise if I offended you. YES, some of yours have been far, far stupidest ;) But, always in an interesting way.
And Jimmy Talbert, the Austin Bound wh%remonger's was certainly a legend in its time.

InBetween,
Can you please tell me where I can get knives and forks in Japan? I have missed them, but I am now ever so native, I hardly notice the loss ;) ;) Nice simile, BTW

OK all forgiven then
Knives and forks - better for the environment than wooden sticks. Two ideas
(1) At the Conveeenee you should get given a metal knife and fork and then deposit them back in a special return box at the end
(2) 政府が発表したからすの特別前面的絶滅プラン。Am I the only one who hates them ?

Good ideers, buddy. And no, all Right Thinkers hate them.

I'll phone my good friend Koizumi (we just call him Junster) and let him know you will be there on Monday at 11.

How you know they aren`t represented on these forums? Can you tell a persons race by how they write?

well Katrina fair enough but use your imagination - there are of course black people here.
Take Black Ray for example. he`s actually a farmer from Burkino Fasso but running a bar in Roppongi, which is Japanese for hell incarnate.
The point of a forum is to project yourself in an odd way and suffer no consequences excpet from the occasional ticking off from Ms TH who for your information knows more than 6 ex-newsreaders.
And Gaijinpot is the only decent forum, The rest are full of maniacs with silly ideas and also the design is all wrong. Well done gaijinpot.
What would happen if the Gaijinpot boss met the JapanToday boss ?

Katrina,
We are teasing you, not slagging you. It was a silly question, but of course, if you can take the shot for posing one, then keep them coming. I have had very much enjoy time to respond. Please send Pocky. Also to Bluedog, for all our Pocky are belong to his.

kaitrina,

Don't listen to all that jive talkin', Kaitrina. Your question is a fair one, especially in its restated form (i.e.'are there many black people in Japan?').

To be honest, nobody really knows....In southern rural villages, for example, most know of black people only through picture books and voodoo magazines. Occasional sightings are reported in the northern part of Japan, but these are hard to corroborate due to the rolling hills and thick forests.

On the other hand, it can safely be said that a conspicuous number of black people is living in major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. Again, however, no reliable data is available. In Shibuya ward, for instance, half the population pretends to be black, a problem that continues to confound census takers.

Let's Engrish

Yeah, that Shibuya crowd...Japanese guys with Afros and the black-fist Black Panther comb showing from the back pocket.

I've never seen any other race working so hard to be another, in this case Black. They're as comical as they are pathetic. Like many of today's Japanese youth, they are rudderless ships drifting to find their soul.

I sympathize with their identity searching; it reminds me of my misspent teenage years. Oh, Barf!!!

Yeah Kaitrina I wouldnt worry much. It is best to get all kinds of answers when you post instead of only one side of things.

It is pretty hard for people to imagine what Japan is like.

I remember when I went back home from my first stint in Japan and one person couldnt believe that there were homeless people in Japan.

There are quite a lot of black people I guess. I forgot that my boss is black. It just didnt occur to me when I read the question.

There are a lot of Africans in Harajuku/Shibuya that dress up like they are hip hoppers from the US and they pressere people to come to hip hop clothing shops. They do well for themselves as a lot of kids in Japan try to dress like they are Ludacris or something.

Well you sure have opened a can of worms havent you....

but that is possibly a good thing
