I don't want to use a program because I'll be moving there myself living in my own apartment since I'll be taking my cat along with me (my mom actually might move with me as well). We both agree that a high school would be the best option to see if I am ready to go to a *Japanese* (or English /Japanese, depending on how ready I am) university. So how would this work? Does she just sign the papers to transfer me into a high school like in the United States? Or is there a whole other process? PLEASE LET ME KNOW. The reason why i dont want to go to a English university down here is because A) First to get into a university I need to raise my GPA more, and B) All the English universities down here have been a total let down... (I'm in Japan looking at them now). Thanks everyone.

Contact your local Rotary club and AFS branch. You also might look into YFU or ASSE, but whatever you do, DON'T CONTACT TWU. They are scum. All of the acronyms are groups that send kids abroad. Rotary is cheapest by far but you might have missed applications depending on how competitive your area is. I'm going next year as an exchange student and was accepted in January (with Rotary). Some of the others offer semesters and stuff too in addition to academic years. Good luck.

At the private HS where I used to work, we had many exchange students, and they used the programs jogabonito mentioned.
Only one student (German) was 19 years old; the others had not finished HS yet. I don't know what other schools will think of you wanting the experience just for the language requirement. You WILL have to fill out an application stating your reasons for wanting to go. Just learning Japanese sounds pretty lame, if you don't mind my saying.
At my school, they offered Japanese lessons...intensive ones... so everyone passed the JLPT level 3 exam in 6 or 10 months. Don't know what other schools offer.
Just sitting in the classroom will be boring for you, though. You will be expected to sit in classes other than Japanese language, and until you get up to speed on some of the language, it will be Greek to you. Most exchange students in my school just sat and studied their kanji, and their grades in math or social studies or science didn't transfer anyway.

I agree with everything he posted above except for the reasons to go. For a lot of the organizations that send people abroad, those are the basic reasons they get, but you might want to add something about broadening your horizons and preparing yourself for an increasingly global economy.
Here's another site you may find more useful:
www.cultures-shocked.org
It's a forum for exchange students.

Why would anyone want to go to HS again?
Amen.
Case Closed.
OP,
why not just come to Japan as a young adult?
High school sucks.

Especially a J-one.
Well, my only experience in a Jpn High School was a lot better than any I had at home.
Mind you, I was just there to help them play with their balls.....

(hope this is in the right section)
I'm wondering if it's possible for me to go to a high school in Japan. The only problem is I'm graduating high school in the States in two months. Do high schools let you foreign exchange when you already have a high school diploma? I want to go just for the experience (and learn as much Japanese as I can there, because from what I have heard you learn more Japanese in a high school year than in an English university and taking Japanese classes). If anyone knows the requirements please let me know.. (also I am a year younger than most seniors.. I'm only 17, my birthday is in early october, so I don't think I'm too old to repeat a year). If anyone knows please, PLEASE let me know!
Thanks so much!
DUDE! Don`t languish in high school after you `ve already graduated! Join the USN, ask for duty in Japan!

I'd say if you're in Japan looking at colleges, why not stop by a high school and ask them the process? They'd probably know at least as good as any of us.

Oh man, you do not want to ask at a high school about colleges, not here. That will get all kinds of idiots involved and create more problems than you can imagine. You will get people who do not have a clue inputting in information that is totally screwed.
