Hi peeps,
coming back to JP with my japanese wife and we really want to rent a house out in the sticks.
I know it's not a very common thing in Japan but still hoping!
We haven't found anything online and are guessing we'll just have to rock up, speak to people and see what we can
find! We're looking for a house in or near a hot spring area not too far from the sea and within 3 hours of Tokyo.
The areas we're hoping for are Shizuoka, Guma, Chiba, Tochigi.
We hoping for a small town or semi-rural but we have open minds.
I'm guessing with the credit crunch, people with unsold houses on the market might would consider renting??

Anyway, I'm looking for any advice, tips or guidance whatsoever, and would be eternally grateful as we're drawing blanks!!
Sort of stumbling in the dark here...

If anyone can recommend agents or websites (JP is fine) that'd be great.
Or if anyone has a house they want to rent to us :)

Thanks, Joe

Advice? I'd avoid farming communities. I have an American acquaintance living in such a place and his neighbors drive him seriously crazy. Not only that, but the entire area smells like pooh, thanks to the organic fertilizer in all the surrounding fields.

Not all farming communities stink, though some do seasonally. I'd avoid having neighbors really close, those old folks are set in their ways. Maybe have some buffer zones, forest, orchards etc.

Ah yes, the poop spreaders were out in full force yesterday!
I tell you what though, you get use to it, I can't tell too much anymore. I have told my coworkers before to let me know if I smell like a farm (dry clothes outside) and in nine years nobody has ever said anything.
