I have lost my Alien Registration Card (Gaijin card). I am aware that I will need to bring my passport, proof of address and verification of present employment and some photos to my local ward office to get a new card.

However, my new company is a bit dodgy- they hired me full time with a good salary but there is no contract and I do not even have any proof that I even work there! The payslips do not have any identifying information on them either. I asked the secretary for a letter or some verification but she wont give me one.

What shoulld I do? I do not want to get fired for pressing them for verification that I work there because I really need this job. But I also need a new card!

I am legal and have a valid visa.

Reissue of Card
If your card is lost or stolen, notify the police immediately. The police will issue a report certifying the incident. Take this report with you to City Hall within fourteen days of losing your card to apply for reissue.
Please be sure to bring the police report, your passport and two portrait photos of yourself (as described in (1) above) with you.

If your employer really wants to hire you, he'll do whatever is needed. It won't be like you're pressing him.

Do you work for English Village?

Thanks Glenski. I did not know I had to go to the police. I thought they were only good for directions. I am already hired- I have been working for this company for over 4 months!

No, I do not work for English Village- I have heard some pretty shady stuff about them though! I won't name my company because it it too small and it will be obvious who I am if any of my co-workers should read these posts.

If you feel it's too troublesome for whatever reason, you always have the option of just not replacing it - f' the system, man.

I've been in Japan a year and have only used it to get a video rental card and I never carry it with me. I even got back into the country without it. If a police officer asks for it say you don't have one because you're in Japan on business/vacation.

In any event, when obtaining my ARC I don't recall presenting proof of employment per se. I just had a valid visa and my employers address.
