If you would like some teaching experience, or some certification, then I do suggest an online course.
There is no independent, international awarding body for the TESL/TEFL Certification. There are many inferior courses out there, and after reviewing many of them, we recommend 2 of the better ones in the industry. Please see http://www.aacircle.com.au/tesl_tefl.htm for more information.
