I heard comments on this site about how difficult is for foreign women to meet foreign man specially the non-english teacher type. Well there are quite a lot of foreign medical doctors, dentists, lawyers etc who live and practice in Japan and also have a hard time meeting foreign women as in discussions with most of them, they are not into Japanese girls....give it a try...

"medical doctors ($money$), dentists ($money$), lawyers ($money$)"

Some people with a profession and money have been known to be perfectly normal attractive people, you know. Is this reverse snobbery?

Hello Koizumi, this post was made by me based on an observation and conversation among foreign professionals living and working in Japan on a long term, and I am male dentist and have found out that is way much better to date foreign women, they are more independent, goal oriented and quite brave to be here....so I respect that.....

sorry about that
stressful day at work
didn't mean to take it out on your thread

as a "gaijin" doctor, dentist, lawyer, I would think that you would have a chance of meeting foreign women. But I guess it would be a little unprofessional to hit on your patient. I dunno...

I'm not sure I have that many insights to share, but...I'm always happy to discuss/learn. Maybe one day it'll all make sense that way...

If Gaijin women are so frustrated, why do they insist on staying year after miserable year in Japan? Stop whining about how thin, cute and submissive the Japanese ladies seem to be and take charge of your lives, already. You AREN'T GOING TO CHANGE generations of Confucianist thought and culture, and quite frankly, most Japanese probably prefer their system as-is. It's certainly their right.

Instead of bitching all the time, either go home or at least go and teach in South America, where foreign women can get romanced, wooed, serenaded and otherwised serviced 24/7 by eager Latino men!!

Gaijin (especially blonde) girls in Latin America = "Charisma Women" ;)

-------

I can only speak for myself, but...

I have not spent "year after miserable year" in Japan. Further, I don't whine about Japanese women (or men for that matter) because, quite frankly, I don't see it as "me against them". The same qualities I liked in women as friends (and men as boyfriends) in the U.S. are the same qualities I like in women (and men) here. In my case, while I have dated only Japanese men while here, the qualities most of them possessed were not that different than most of the men I dated back home. Why? Because, as I said, what I want in a partner hasn't changed. Perhaps it's more difficult to find a Japanese man who possesses these qualities, but then, I guess it was challenging back home as well.

Again, I can only speak for myself, but I am not just looking for someone who likes me because A) I'm novel, or B) I speak English. That's kind of missing the whole point in finding someone. Maybe those are the things that bring you together initially (there's always something that does be it looks, position, etc.); however, I don't think my aspirations are to be "serviced"...by anyone.

I'm not sure what you mean about changing their "system". Not clear on that.

Bottom line - no matter what country you are in, I think most would agree it's difficult to find a quality partner. If your aim is simply to be "serviced", "wooed", and/or "serenaded", maybe it's less difficult (or more...I don't know many people who serenade their partners!!!). I haven't a clue. I don't think this has to do simply with culture. Certainly, being a gaijin in this country can sometimes limit (as well as increase) the number of potential partners. In my case, they are further limited by the fact that I'm a pathetic gaijin who still hasn't chosen to learn Japanese...at least well. Because of this, and my "goals" (i.e., not being "serviced"), it makes it more...of a challenge. [In my defense - I think part of the reason I haven't really learned Japanese is because, in some ways, it keeps me from fully integrating into Japanese culture. Further, because of this, I HAVE TO find a man who speaks English well...which, as a result, usually means he's more "Western" than your average Japanese male. Maybe it's a defense mechanism?!]

That's all. Hardly year after miserable year in Japan though.

I agree that is difficult to meet potential partners......very....

Dont go calling English teachers airheads. They are not.

Dont go getting English teachers mixed up with American marines in Roppongi.

Being a professional doesnt give someone higher status (well maybe in Japan).
Personally I would rather chew glass than work the type of hours that professionals do. Also the stress levels are so high. Do you what the average life span of lawyers and doctors are in Western countries? I forgot the number but its pretty low.

Well I think that being a professional does take stress, effort and time but definetely is worth it.... the easy way is just avoid working and take it the easy way like most gaijins do here.....and yes I am aware that life span, suicide , drug abuse and alcoholism among dentists and lawyers are ridiculous but I think is a matter of personal choice....but yes in Japan being a professional is very cool and rewarding......good luck in Nova...

No I did my dash in Nova when I was 20 years old. Was only there for 9 months to support going to a language school and 9 months was about all I could take. Working at Nova is not mentally stimulating, but looking back it was probably the most fun Ive ever had. There were so many fun and interesting people there. Also there were people there for so many reasons. An Aussie guy I know set a goal of being in Japan for 8 years teaching English (not all at Nova) so that he could have enough money to go back get a house and live on easy street. Hes back now taking it easy. There were other people who had interesting jobs back home but wanted to try something completely different. There was one complete loser who was in his 40's and was only in Japan to find a wife, but ...well.... he was the only one.

All and all, the guys and girls at Nova knew how to have a good time, and to throw caution to the wind and come to Japan shows a great spirit of adventure. I now work for a Japanese company with Japanese people that bore the pants off me. I really do miss the type of people that worked at Nova even though I didnt enjoy the job.

Hey ! Well do you think life is all about fun and be around funny people? Is sure important but is more important to secure one`s future. I agree is quite an adventure to come to Japan and work and live here, but at least escape from the rest of the sheep, how much can you last being "party " party " and pretending it will last forever??? When you are 20 is OK to get a teaching job but after 30????

Well I hear you, especially when you've got kids like I do now.

Alot of people do secure a decent future by saving a lot of hard earned english money and then investing it back home.

By the way, hows that student loan going? Dont worry another 10 yeards of looking down peoples throats and it will be in the past.
Just kidding! You sound like the type of guy that would have paid it off ages ago. It is quite a challenge for young professionals in my country though. Thats why a lot of them end up going to the states to work. Its called the "brain drain". All the skilled people are leaving never to return.

Well we cant be 20 all the time .....hehehe
And the nice thing about Japan is that they actually pay you to do your residency and I think is one of the world`s best kept secrets......they pay you 5 years of training and education , when I tried to apply to the States as a foreign dentist, wel you can only get student loans if you are a national, which it sounds reasonable and also even if you got into a program you have to spit 25,000 US each yeah plus your living expenses, here in Japan they pay outr tuition, stipend and plane ticket from back home......so is no question why we are here......we are all mercenaries.....hehehe
see you , and remember to visit your dentist twice a year.......

Hey Man, you have to think on long term, maybe now they still look OK but in 20 years?? You will have to feed your self with a straw, you wont be able to chew even tofu...hehehe
Just go and have a check up....please...

Hi
2004-08-25, 05:41 PM
To Mexicanyakuza

Respek. Keep workin hard. i think good women are hard to find regardless of age or profession. Anyway, my question is why do Japanese teeth suck? Is food different here? more sugar? no flouride in the water? My friends all use toothpaste at least twice a day, but some of them still dont have great teeth and a thousand fillings. Whats up? I kinda worry that my teeth are gonna fall out while Im here.

mexicanyakuza
2004-08-25, 07:38 PM
Well this is a very common question and yes I might agree with you , dental culture is not related to the dental technology available in Japan , dental prevetion is quite new and few people actually take care of their teeth. And is very ironic that Japan has state of the art care. Dental caries is also dependant on race, if you see the teeth of black people are most of the time beautiful and caries free and in my opinion have the best teeth. Asian people suffer from enamel problems....most of the time.
But you should not worry about it, brush your teeth regularly, floss, and get a check up twice a year, dental treatment if you use the national health insurance is quite cheap if you compare it with Europe and the US.....
Take care
Kind regards.
Juan

To be honest Im scared to go to a Japanese dentist because:
a) Ive heard they cost the earth and...
b) Ive heard they still use metal fillings when in my home country they use fisher ceiling (or something that sounds like that word) you know the see - through stuff.

Well I think you have been misinformed, dental care in Japan is not so expensive, if you have insurance, I think I get better deal than in Mexico.....really
And about the dental fillings, they use the ones that are the same color than your teeth....
So go to the dentist!!!!!!!!!!!!!
See you

I have a J girlfriend who just went to the dentist and returned with a mouthful of metal. She told me "I don't like it." In case I need fillings while I'm here, how do I ask for the stuff that is the same color as my teeth?

Hello, well dentistry is just like any other business....
And if you want fillings that look the same color as your teeth they are called photocurable resins, they are a type or acrylic that is soft and is make hard by a special light, they come in different tones and shades and can match any color or teeth, for a crown they use ceramics and also can be made to match the rest of your teeth.....so maybe having metal restorations which they are still in use in Japan are a choice depending primarily con costs....metal is cheaper than ceramics....
And we are at the Dental Hospital at Osaka University....

Juan
