does anyone know where i can pick up a decent cheap second hand bike?

When people leave their bikes at the station the city gathers them up and puts them in a huge bike depository where their owners can go and pay around 1,000 Y to get them back. Usually every other month cities auction off bikes that nobody claims and you can get decent bikes dirt cheap. It might be worth calling up city hall to find out when the next auction is.

also ask your students. They often have an extra bike lying around.
I have a few bikes placed at strategic places around town, beaters in the rain, but handy. Just don't leave them in the same place for weeks at a time.

some cities have actual 2nd hand stores that sell bikes for pretty cheap.
