I would highly recommend going with these:

It's all about levels.
And maybe a few of these thrown around, for aesthetic effect.

How did you get a new life? If you can patent it, you will soon be the richest person on this planet. Ifve been hanging on to my old one now for quite a long time.
For furnishings – visit Ikea, go dumpster diving (second hand shops), or check the sayonara sales, etc. – like the rest of usc Surely you will find a motif and style that you like, and maybe can afford.

Of course no surprise, but it very expensive to buy new design furniture here... if you have a generous budget, try Cassina (there is an amazing showroom in Aayoma), Living Motif (I like the one in Roppongi, in the Midtown Tower; not everything is displayed on the floor so check out their catalogue) or HH Style. You may have to wait up to three months for special orders (couch, etc.). A cheaper alternative would be Bo Concept - there are several stores here.
When I moved here a lot of people recommended IDC; although their stores are huge, apart from a couple of knock off pieces (for example, a Le Corbusier chair or a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona imitation), for the most part the furniture was not what I would consider modern or design.
Ditto on the sayonara sales for bargain hunting although you will see a mix of everything. You have to act fast and usually arrange your own transport, but the savings can be substantial. Good luck!

Thanks for all the great suggestions!!!!!
I will definitely keeping trying second-hand shops, you can find the coolest pieces that way (I found the greatest lamp here that route:)). I checked out Living Motif and Cassina - very impressive.
Completely agree on the IDC recommendation, but will give Sayonara Sales a chance.
Kurogane - thanks for the links!
One piece I really liked (I believe the first pieces go to auction in about a month) was this table from Cassina - here's the link if your interested.
