A colleague of mine is working on a case that invloves sexual slavery. Due to this I have become privy to information (in the form of addresses) where young women from mainland China are currently being held against their will & forced to work as prostitutes. Nothing can be done with this info as the Police are carrying out surveilance in order to successfully prosecute the scum that are using these women. It's pretty disturbing though, to know that this is going on & will continue to go on & we are powerless to do anything in the meantime.

The one positive aspect of this is that the Police are actually trying to do something. I hear a lot of disturbing stories about the Japanese Police either turning a blind eye to these matters, or else simply deporting the victims if they manage to escape (often after they've contracted HIV). It's difficult to establish the veractiy of things you find on the Web. Does anyone know any reliable sites (in English) that deal with this issue? I'm thinking of a Japan specific focus here.

The IOM are the most active in this area. (International Organisation for Migration)

If you do a proper search you will find details of the sub-group dealing with women's slavery and trafficking. It is also on here somewhere.

BTW - the police do not generally deport them - they hand them back to their "employers!" Hence little or no trust of the Japanese police.

Suggest you look at:

and
Traffic in Women - Skrobanek, Boonpakdi and Janthakeero

there was alos a Japan specific article on this issue in the Far Eastern Economic Review but sorry it was a few years back I dunno any other details - the upshot was many are lured to Japan on false promises then kidnapped at the airport - with a sex industry as large as Japan it`s not surprising this kinda crap goes on - apparently also according to an article I read just a week or so in the Daily Yomiru the government is going to tighten up on this issue but seeing in believing i think!

That sounds like Magistrates in the Tokagawa period ordering the return of runaways to the Public Brothels. I guess it's a slight improvement in that now it's simply corrupt instruments of justice rather than the justice system itself that's abusing them - but that's hardly gunna be much comfort to the women in question!
