Should I buy an iPod in Japan or wait to get one in Australia? Are the models released in Japan before they're released in Australia? Any info regarding this would be great gpotters....thanks

This is just a guess (can't say for sure), but it seems to me that they are all the same thing. Meaning, my IPod can change languages, etc. so basically it seems it's for...anywhere. Yes, the manual is in Japanese and the software (on CD) is in Japanese too (of course, you can download the English version from the web) because I bought it here; however, other than those (perhaps crucial?) things, seems it's the same thing no matter where I would have bought it.
As I qualified early on though, this is just my guess.

as said, the ipods the same here as in australia. but it is a little cheaper here!, and would be nice to listen to on the plane back! although, you should get the battery pack too.
