I don't have a lot of money saved. Until my first paycheck kicks in, can I live on U.S. credit cards? For groceries, subway and train, etc?

As long as you have credits available on your credit card, you can live on it. There may be places where credit cards are not accepted but you can still withdraw some cash from a ATM machines. you will get charged interest for using your credit card so be sure to include this in your budget.
What type of CC do you have? Visa? master Card? American Express? others?

Many shops/ supermarkets have a \10,000 limit, under which they will not accept credit cards. Amex is not so popular in those places, VISA is best.
Train passes are possible with credit cards, daily commuting, no.
