I moved back to Japan 3/2012. 1/1/13 I resided in Nara, so they are the local tax man for 2013 which will be paid in arrears in 2014. But as of 1/1/13 I had been living in Japan less than a year.

I'm wondering about crossing the 1 year residence timeline midyear. I've looked around and seen hints eg on Nagoya city web site (random English search) which says that if you have lived in Japan for less than 1 year on 1/1/xxxx you will not get sent a local tax bill for year xxxx. This makes a bit of sense, OTOH why should they exempt me for the whole year of 2013 when I was at 9.5 months on 1/1/2013? Seems like they should pro-rate it.

Does anybody have experience with this regarding billing for local taxes for the calendar year of the 1 year anniversary of moving to Japan?

I'm no longer living in Nara, so I can't easily go and ask at the city tax office. Not sure if local tax rules/collection are uniform everywhere in every prefecture. Are they? That's actually another interesting question.

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know of any way to calculate the amount of net salary per month on a salary? I've been given an offer in Japan. Basically my base salary will be split into 17 parts, I will recieve 12 of those parts monthly, the other 5 parts will be split into two separate payments called the winter and summer bonus, on top of that there is a performance bonus. However, what I want to know is, how to I figure out how much I will be taxed monthly on the 12 monthly payments I will receive? I found this calculator online, can anyone say if it is legitimate or not? I'm planning on living in either Suginami-ku, or Nakano-ku.
Any help would be appreciated guys.

I know of a Japanese national from reading the person's blog for several years. I know their name, general location in Japan, and have saved pictures and blog entries as pdf documents to i.d. them later on. I am not related to the person. This person does not know me or my name. The only contact I've had was a few encouraging anonymous replies on the person's blog.

I am not interested in leaving anything to the few family members I have left as they frankly do not deserve anything. I was thinking of leaving everything to this person and was wondering about tax laws. I see that some people get around this by giving gifts while you are still alive; however, that is really not an option as I'll need to essentially keep what I have until the end.

I am not really sure "inheritance" is really the right term as I wish to have a few conditions that must be met, so perhaps "trust" is a better word. The conditions would mainly be there to act a "carrot before the horse" - essentially to act as a reward for continuing with self improvement.

At this point in time we are talking about several million yen in cash plus some further cash from disposing of the property, so nothing that big, but certainly a way for this person to "catch up" from the years lost due to medical conditions. Having suffered from several of the same medical issues I know exactly where this person is coming from.

Any thoughts on lawyers to use (U.S. based vs. Japan based), taxes, and other issues?

Hi all,
First timer here.
I have a financial question that I believe you can help me with.
I hope you would not mind answering a question that might have been asked a couple of times already..but here's my situation:

My friend asked me to set up a purchasing company for him.
The main purpose of the company is to receive funds for purchasing goods in Japan, and then forward it to the respective shipper for transport.
He would like myself to be the owner of the company (since I'm a citizen after all), however, he do not wish to affect my personal income tax since the company will be receiving big amount of money for the purchases.
The company will not be making any profit since all the money transferred will be used solely to purchase goods to be exported.

My question is that...what form of company fits best for my situation here?

Thank you in advance for your advices/comments!

Ifm currently starting to go through the process of getting my pension tax refund (got the pension itself about two years ago) and was hoping for a little advice. The instructions I got from my supervisor when I finished my stint on JET have a lot of detail about how to get the pension but say little about the tax part. Ifve managed to find a few sites that have instructions but since I am cutting this pretty close to the 5 year cutoff I want to avoid mistakes.

For the forms that I need to submit (the one designating a tax representative and the one requesting the refund are the only two that I know of) is there a specific government site where I can find these at? I have a copy I got from another site but Ifd prefer to use one direct from the source that processes them in case the one I have is inaccurate or out of date.

Second, my wife and I plan to be in Japan this summer. Is it possible for me to file for this directly or to designate my wife as my representative and then have her file while we are there (she is a citizen but technically not a resident). And how long does it take to get the actual refund? Shefll be in Japan for a few weeks but if the refund comes after she leaves it might be harder to have it sent back to us in the States. Our current plan is to designate my mother-in-law but if we can save her the extra work then that would be great too.
