Jazz on a summer's day:
As a teenager I lived in Los Angeles during what some writers call "the golden era of modern jazz". At that time there was a club called "Jazz City" and the owner opened the club on Saturday afternoons for kids to see the greatest names in jazz. On one occasion the program said that Anita O'Day and Carmen McRae would be featured. Two of the finest jazz singers ever. When we got to the club both of them were there and they had a bassist and a drummer. We thought the piano player was late. But then Carmen McRae sat down at the piano and accompanied Anita O'Day. Carmen was more than great in the role of pianist. They were the best of friends as they informed us during the course of the afternoon. I couldn't find a video of Carmen McRae playing but here she is commenting on her good friend.
