  • Japan turns down Chinese proposal on joint gas development

Japan has turned down a Chinese proposal to jointly develop gas fields near the disputed Senkaku islands, a top Japanese official said Wednesday.
The two countries held two days of talks this week on disputed gas deposits in the East China Sea. During the talks, China reportedly proposed joint exploration of separate deposits near the Senkakus.

But Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said Tokyo would not go along with that idea.

"The proposal is not the one we can accept," Abe told reporters. "Although we need to closely examine the content of China's proposal, I think it is inconsistent with our previous position." (AP)
