    Japan racism 'deep and profound'
    By Chris Hogg
    BBC News, Tokyo

"Only about 1% of Japan's population is registered as foreign.

An independent investigator for the UN says racism in Japan is deep and profound, and the government does not recognise the depth of the problem.

Doudou Diene, a UN special rapporteur on racism and xenophobia, was speaking at the end of a nine-day tour of the country.

He said Japan should introduce new legislation to combat discrimination.

Mr Diene travelled to several Japanese cities during his visit, meeting minority groups and touring slums."

    Japan mulls multicultural dawn

"He said that although the government helped to organise his visit, he felt many officials failed to recognise the seriousness of the racism and discrimination minorities suffered.

He was also concerned that politicians used racist or nationalist themes, as he put it, to whip up popular emotions. He singled out the treatment of ethnic Koreans and Chinese and indigenous tribes.

Mr Diene says he plans to recommend that Japan enact a law against discrimination, which he said should be drawn up in consultation with minority groups.

He said he would now wait for the Japanese government to respond to his comments before submitting a report to the United Nations."

      Recent

      It was on the news:

Tokyo governor sued for saying French 'fails as international language'

Sued by its 'own' citizens about a foreign language. Man....how does french fail? Guy is screwed up.

      --------------------------------------------------
Racism + Discrimination is the exact sentiment during Japan's Conquest of Asia, especially CHINA. WE SHOULD BE ALL OUTRAGED! Their people just don't change, don't learn about other nations, other peoples. That's the problem!

Bad press may give the Japanese government a little bit of a hurry up, but any anti-discrimination legislation would have to be passed by the Diet. Fat chance of it getting through.

His reasoning for this is silly as well, it has everything to do with the way the French use numbers to count. For example "90" is "quatre-vignt-dix" or literally "four twenties plus 10".

And yet, in Japanese you count by 10s so "90" is "kyu-juu" or "nine tens". And don't get me started on the counting words like "pon" & "mai".

The governor just needs to learn to shut the fark up.

Ishihara does indeed need to learn when to shut up.
Like it or not, French is an international language.

France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, not to mention numerous African countries and so on use it as an official language.

Fermez la bouche Monsieur Ishihara! (apologies if I have butchered this, I barely know any French at all.)

No need for one J.T.; big difference between making mistakes in trying to speak a language and dismissing one wholesale as useless (despite the fact that there are more people that speak it in the world than your own) for some f_cked up reason.

I'm in total agreement; Ishihara is a xenophobic dinosaur but I think it speaks volumes about the country in general as to how he is remains Tokyo's governor at 72 and is consistently selected as one of the most popular politicians in Japan.

If Ishihara thinks French has "failed" as an international language, he should take a look at Japanese.

Completely off topic expect that it has something to do with politicians saying things:

Did anybody see the news report on Koizumi last night while he was addressing the Diet? While he was speaking he was smirking a bit, and then later during interviews several members said things like,
                "そんな丁寧な言葉を使えば困るね。"
I took their comments to generally mean,
"He's pissing on our heads by using teinei like that. It's outrageous that our own PM uses teinei so flagarantly."

Can anyone explain what the f@ck he was talking about or if I've misunderstood it altogether? I'm watching these guys going on about Koizumis address and thinking, They've solved all their other problems and now they're just twiddling their thumbs

Well, usually we'd say "fermez la geule..." but that's just semantics.

Japanese politicians are dangerous idiots. Every so often they will open their mouth and let the world know exactly how idiotic they are. But Ishihara needs to go.

Japanese Security Council Seat being linked to racism.

I read an editorial today that Japan should not get a seat on the UN security council, because it still has many racial problems within it own countries to fix. One UN inspector even said, “First Japan need to get it own house in order” mean before Japan get a seat to Judge other it should first clean it own house up. The editor raised issue on popular books like “Little black sambo” and “The five Chinese brothers”. I think the biggest problem for Japan is how it treats it citizen of Korean origin. The owner of Lotera (SP) and Lota (SP) is of Korean origin. He is one of the wealthiest men in Japan and his family has live in Japan for three generations, still he must wait in the Foreign line to get his drivers license. A relatively simple task made hard, because of Japanese racism. Do you think that Japanese racism should be link to it role in the Security Council? I think we should first look at Japan views within it own country not so much it view on other countries. I think the way a country treats it own people is an indication how it will treat other nations.

I like you people here man..
                        Good stuff California84!

Kumachan: You are right. I mean I could be speaking some martian dialect language and it involves counting 1-5, then 6 would be '1' plus '5', and 10 would be '5' plus '5', the logic is the least number of digits to make up the final answer. It promotes higher thinking and math and logic. This Martian dialect would be so GODD**N CULTURAL!!!! That's what makes it a foreign language!!!! Down with these flavorless Mr Japanese.

One last point: how civilized is beating up, slapping, paper throwing, baseball battting people in a Diet, parliament floors, government session locale. This is exactly what happened before in JAPAN, so called 'government' of TAIWAN especially. Some guy went up to a female speaker and pushed her down in a government session. WTF!!!!!! I can't believe these people are "ELECTED!!!"
