    Default Japanese magazines

I posted something like this before in the learning Japanese forum and got no response, so I figured I'd try my luck here instead.

I'm looking for some recommendations on decent Japanese magazines, something along the lines of Harper's or the New Yorker, with a fair mix of articles on a variety of topics, maybe with some fiction mixed in. I asked my wife and got a blank stare (she's not a really big reader). Basically something I can read on the train or before bed in short doses. I don't really want to get into a novel, nor am I really interested in reading flavorless Japanese newspaper articles.

Does anyone have any good experiences? I'd also be interested in essay collections and the like, if you have any good ones to recommend.

Nikkei Veritas Is one to try. Others... ...Only the papers really. They haven't (Japanese) got a real wealth of domestic periodicals.

Go to a bookstore (not a convenience store) and browse. Bookstores tend to have the more grown-up stuff.

The wife is Japanese, yeah???? She was probably surprised there are humanoids that need more than primitively drawn pictures with a sub-cretinous sexually violent plot to be entertained.

The popularity of Manga is no fluke, son.

Anything with a title involving the character for Haru (read as Shun) is what you are looking for. They have a mix of literary criticism (snooze!), topical articles, and the usual blather.

You're drunk again. I will bet you a single British Pound under current exchange rates that Japan has the most prolific periodical industry in the known world. Winner buys the first round.

They do read, after all, unlike ours.
They read crap, but they do read.

    Yup. What BagBoy said.

Like I said above, anything with Shunbun in the title is worth a try.

Ask the shopkeeper about Hyouron kei no zasshi.

I hope she's cute when you do.

    I love librarian type chicks.

Thanks, I'll try to follow up on some of these leads. Though I peg the chances of finding a cute, bookish clerk as being slim to none. They only exist as plot devices in the above-mentioned manga, to be ravaged by the hypersexual antihero.

In case anyone else is interested in the same kind of thing, I was at the bookstore today and picked up a copy of a journal called Monkey Business. Seems like what I was looking for, from the little I've skimmed through it. They've got a spotlight on Paul Auster this month, have an interview with him, plus a collection of other fiction, essays, etc. Whether they're any good or not, time will tell.

Are there ever any English sections in these book stores?
    I'm thinking no.

You would have to go to a big chain like Junkudou or Kinokuniya. Those are the ones in Osaka at least. I'm not sure what they have in Yokohama, but there must be something. They have smallish sections of overpriced English books. If you want to read in English, you're probably best off buying an e-book reader and downloading online, or else ordering through Amazon which, while not exactly cheap, will at least get you a better rate than whatever the bookstore's offering. It actually gets pretty stupid. There's about a 500 yen mark-up on literary fiction, while it's not surprising to see a $17-20 non-fiction book going for 3500 yen or more.
