    Default Fukushima English Teaching

    Hey guys,

Does anyone currently work in Fukushima?

A couple of days ago an English Teaching school/company contacted me with a potential job in Fukushima.

Can anyone shed any light on what the conditions are like now? The salary they mentioned is quite low...not sure if that means they are cheap or have few students now.

To the smartasses on the board, yes I am aware about the general radiation problem in Fukushima. I also know that its a big prefecture and life goes on (or so it seems from this last offer).

    Ideas? Comments?

Where in Fukushima? Conditions there vary from normal to evacuated ghost town - it's a big prefecture. Radiation levels also vary enormously, even from village to village.

How much is the salary? Seriously, if it ain't at least 270,000Yen a month...

It ain't worth taking... That would be how much my 22 y/o, first time job would be worth...
Why do so many people exploit Facebook in such inane ways?

Hmmm... are you sure it's not an evacuated 'death' town?

Happy vs. satisfactorily compensated (plus Japanese chicks on the side) are totally different...

    Translation: eikaiwa? ALT dispatch agency?

How is it they "contacted" you? Was this in response to something you sent them?

The salary they mentioned is quite low...not sure if that means they are cheap or have few students now.
So, it's an eikaiwa after all.

What exactly is the salary, and what are the working conditions?

    Default clarifications

I guess I was not very clear in my question, so please let me elaborate.

Salary -- enough that I am interested.

Area -- obviously outside of the government-mandated evacuation zone...lets just say that the location(s) is at least 70km away (several locations were shown as available, I am not sure how much of this is true though).

Quality of Life -- a very philosophical question the answer to which is ...my choices are limited (please leave it at that).

I have seen the TV shows and spoke to some friends of friends who live in Fukushima prefecture. I am still not able to figure out what the current life is like out there. Is it back to "life as usual" or "lets rebuild our life" or "lets show a good face while we are looking for a job elsewhere". Lately, I am starting to think its the latter...but that is the reason I am asking people with experience out there.

I do not wish to end up moving out there only to find out 3 months down the road that my salary is not paid because there are no customers/no money.

    Ideas? Opinions?

Look, first you say the salary is quite low, and you ask for advice, and now you say that the salary is enough to interest you. That is a contradiction as I see it. Three people have asked you what exactly is the salary! You want advice. Tell us!

You won't describe the work conditions, as far as you have been explained, that is. How are we supposed to give advice without knowing this, too?

You're just not giving people here enough to go on. But that, too, has already been mentioned here.

What is your problem? You have information from people who are actually there. What is it that they are unable to explain to you?

    Are you in Japan now?

Honestly my advice would be to just forget about. What would be the point of moving to a disaster zone for a fairly low-paying job you could get elsewhere in Japan? Would you go to Fukushima to work at McDonald's? Think of it that way.

I could see going there if you were a highly paid engineer going to work on the reconstruction but not some random sh1t job.

i basically agree with everyone here. and as glenski pointed out... you have friends who live there. friends. so why are you asking us when you have the best resource in front of you. but honestly i can't see the reason why you'd go there... even though you already have friends there you could get a job elsewhere. especially if this is an eikaiwa position.

There are radiation maps here : kipuka.blog70.fc2.com/blog-entry-393.html

I would also only work there if it's a 'low-risk' area and the pay is at a premium compared to non-affected areas of Japan. If you are worried about not getting paid after three months, make sure that your contract has monthly payments. You might also ask for moving costs, etc. that are paid in advance.

Finally, an answer that sticks to the question. THANK YOU! This map is interesting (though coming from government sources not sure how much it can be trusted).

Let me ask a follow up question: Does anyone on this forum live in the rough geographical triangle of Shirokawa - Kikuta - Okuma? If yes, what are your thoughts on life in that area? Is it "normal" or "not normal"?

Recently I overheard a story of a couple of such "hot-spot checkers" going to Fukushima and getting radiation poisoning (throwing up and stuff after a few hours). I am trying to follow up on this one and find out where exactly they went.

    Thanks,
    mik-J.

P.S. Salary offered is enough (no I do not intend to start a salary discussion by announcing it).
    Moving expenses...are you joking?
Monthly salary...of course, and we all remember what happened 3 years ago.
Friends of friends....I clearly stated that the answers I got were confusing and make me think that people are trying to keep from "loosing face". They are not my friends, we were not involved in an all-night drinking session....they had no reason to be open.

If "friends of friends" gave you confusing answers, and they actually live there, what makes you think an anonymous discussion forum will provide anything better?

    Best of luck.

It really depends on how you look at it. It might be a wonderful experience and opportunity to reach out to the people in Fukushima! Obviously living standards would be lower (money wise) than Tokyo. I personally would obtain a geiger counter, a good one. It would be a great way to meet and make friends with people, too, if you went out and about with it measuring here and there (I'm not being sarcastic).
    Come as you are.

Finally, a positive reaction! I agree. I am sure the reaction the OP will get from most people in Fukushima will be like a warm glow that
    radiates from their core.

The only warning I would give is not to ask too many personal questions about the recent calamities. There might be some fallout from that.

That must be an urban legend or hypochondria. There are thousands of people working directly at the plant for clean-up. When radioactivity is so bad that you get headaches and throw up, you'll die withing the next month : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acute_radiation_syndrome

Getting a Geiger counter is a good idea (apparently the Chinese are now building 'fake' ones), but not only consider the external radiation but also be cautious about the food there.
