    Default Any suggestions for Kobe?

I'm going to Kobe for 2 days (staying nights of 29th and 30th dec)
    I've never been there before.
Mainly I plan on sitting in my hotel room looking at the bay and contemplating.
I'll go up the hill and look at one of the 3 great night views of Japan or whatever.
    Besides that?

    Where's the beef?
The only thing in Japan that is harder than being a foreigner in Japan, is being Japanese in Japan.

Maya-san and Rokko-san are worth checking out. Chinatown is pretty cool.
Runaway cop, never going back. Wrong way on a one-way track.

Down by the harbour there's a section that has been left as it was after the Hanshin earthquake. If you walk through the area with the ferris wheel & all that, west of there's a shopping mall with a contraption in a big glass box where balls go through a series of slides, funnels etc like something out of an OK Go video. The whole cycle takes about 15 minutes, & is worth checking out. You could also get the cable car up Rokko San.
Who's that tripping over my bridge?

there is a "themed" Starbucks in the Ijinkan area of Kitano. The shop is a former residence. Over 100-years old and left fairly intact. Nice please to chill with coffee. I like the upstairs front room.

Kobe offers a lot of good food. Some cheap, some expensive. There are famous beef places, famous tofu places, lots of italian places, and so on...

The area under the JR line from Sannomiya to Kobe station is filled with shops. They get cheaper the further west you go. There is also a shotengai that runs parallel to that, just south. If nothing else, good exercise.

The aquatic center on Port Island will have been changed to an ice skating rink by then. You can rent skates and have a go.

    Museums.
... and thanks to you well_bicyclically, you helped me a lot.

Thanks a lot to all of you. That's really helpful.
    I'm staying at Rokku island.
Is there anywhere in Kobe to have a beer or two outside and watch the people go by?

Anywhere near a konbini that sells beer. There's a Hobgoblin in Sannomiya. You could walk around the Oji zoo with a couple of beers.

Rokko Island has a nice park area to drink beer in.
I think it's true and that's good enough for me.

I'm not going to a zoo in Asia again and you know I'm never going to spend 800 yens at a goddamn hobgoblin for a beer.
Where is that park on rokku Island?
    thank you very much.

I think it's Rokko, so you know.

Anyways, get a hooker. They're bound to be Taiwanese.

    Way better poochies.

    Have fun.

I don't think I would want to use the word 'epicentre' when talking about Kobe.............

At any rate, I haven't been there sober in 20 years.........I forget.

I do remember it being a rather centreless city, but like I said, I wuz drunk.

a pity....Fabulous Rokko Island.... a bit sterile and outdate these days. the real estate market there is in a tail spin as P&G decided to bail.... R.I. has a "Costco" Discount shop!! Scratch and Dent, nearly out of date goods...Amazing that. R.I. has seen better days. The BOOK OFF there just closed recently!! Go figure.

You have to take the rather pricey Rokko Liner to connect to either the Hanshin or JR lines to get into Sannomiya/Motomachi/Kobe metro areas. just a five minute train ride to west on express trains.

Sannomiya is the center for food and drink.
Motomachi is the center for shopping,

You have the former foreign settlement in the hills, and Chinatown south of Motomachi station.

Kobe.... not much going on there. But, Kobe is the gateway to the port area -- Port Tower, Mosaic Shopping and Restaurants, et all. The Otani Hotel at Harbor Land is now closed. Most of the HarborCircus/Familo building is empty. The Hankyu Department store is set to vacate its location, in favor of what is rumored to be another AEON SuperCenter. Another major piece of harborfront real estate sits undeveloped due to deals fallen through....

If you do go out and kick up your heels in Sannomiya, plan on a taxi ride back to Rokko Island.

No need to go to Arima. It is pushed as the out-of-towner's must-see, but locals rarely go there. Overpriced, and not much to do.
... and thanks to you well_bicyclically, you helped me a lot.

Yeah..Rokko Island sucked. City of the future that didn't work out.... IT had a nice view though.. and the bar at the top of the hotel was nice.
I really liked downtown Kobe but I really loved the view at night from Mt Rokko. That was the highpoint.

Kobe is one of my favourite cities in Japan and it is very attractive International city. The great thing about Kobe is its size with most of the sights reachable on foot from the main train stations.

    The highlights of Kobe include:

Shin-Kobe Cable Car and Nunobiki Habu-koen - the views from the top over Kobe and the bay are amazing. Nunobiki Habu-koen is a herb garden and complex of gardens with restaurants and shops.

Nankinmachi (Kobe Chinatown) - a great place to visit in the evening with lots of great restaurants and street food.

Kobe Harbour Land - lots of cool restaurants and entertainment.
