I was an unbelievably happy first time father 10 days ago, but today we went to register the baby's birth at the city office.

Everything was taking the usual long time but progessing along nicely until it was time to visit the Kodomo Teate counter.

We were told that whichever parent has the higher income has to fill out the forms for the Kodomo Teate and because I don't have Kokumin hoken or Shakaihoke we're not eligible!!

My wife doesn't work and is on Kokumin kenko hoken insurance. I work and only have private insurance.

Has anyone else ever had a similar experience? Should I just register for Kokumin hoken? Will I have to back-pay?

Any other advice of what to do?? Really don't want to miss out on this money.
