If they are not illegal, then they shouldn't be able to be taken down. That's the whole point of having a line between legality and illegality.

And even if you want to decide that 'unwanted' sites should be taken down, who makes that decision? That was the problem with SOPA - there was no due process. Basically someone arbitrarily decides that they don't want the site, and it gets taken down.

Things change, and some things that used to make people money stop making people money, and those people need to adapt. Ask any blacksmith if you disagree.

In that case, any website you may make is unwanted and I will file a complaint with the authorities to have it taken down and you arrested. I hope you enjoy your long stay in Gitmo with all the other internet pirates.

In fact this being Sunday (movie night) I better get cracking.

    Anyone recommend a new release?

I downloaded "The Artist" which has great reviews but the wife doesn`t want to watch it.

Procure "Trespass" (2011) w Nicolas Cage. One of his best movies yet, awesome thrilling suspense.

I really do not know about that, but what seems to be very obvious to me is, that it is only a side effect that SOPA is a present to Hollywood industries....
It's main purpose is to create a weapon for Washington to shut down ANY website it wants.

Just watch a republican debate and then tell me, that those people are interested in something like that....

Maybe she is blind and not deaf.... You might try "Perfect Sense", which covers both.

If you also watch TV programs, very recommendable is "Boss" with Kelsey Grammer. I watch the whole first season in two evenings, a really great one. For people who think shows like "Boardwalk Empire" are boring, because they are much to superficial and there have been others like it. "Boss" is really different!

I think Nicolas Cage is my least favorite actor. The best I can say about him is he's been in a couple movies where he hasn't absolutely sucked, and didn't manage to screw up the rest of the movie for anyone else.

    Personal opinion only though.

Boss is probably my favorite show of 2011. Kelsey Grammar was amazing in it, which is something I never thought I would say.

I didn't say he's stupid or wrong–just irritating. And seriously, if you've ever been a moderate Megaupload user you better start worrying.

    Default Holy sh-t!

It's the beginning of the end of the internet...
FileSonic Accounts No Longer Allowed To Share Files Following Megaupload Crackdown

Reuters) - FileSonic, a website providing online data storage, has disabled its file sharing services following a U.S.-led crackdown on a rival website and amid heated debate over Washington's attempts to clamp down on online piracy.

Filelockers such as FileSonic or RapidShare actually have a physical copy of the item to be downloaded, that means that they are liable if you are sharing with other people. Bittorrent sites do not possess the files, they only list the hash information or encrypted addresses of the distributed locations of the file to be downloaded.

Looks like the major difference in illegality between Torrenting and what Megaupload (and perhaps why they were so pursued) was doing has to do with where the files are stored, and also this:

    http://torrentfreak.com/cyberlocker-...action-120123/

"One of the key allegations is that between 2005 and mid 2011, Megaupload ran a program that rewarded users for uploading infringing material. A cited internal email allegedly shows staff members discussing cash payments going to people uploading “full popular DVD rips” and “software with keygenerators (Warez)”.Although Megaupload stopped paying out rewards in July 2011, that didn’t stop the site from getting raided. Other cyberlocker services are clearly hoping they will be more lucky."

Looks like others are following suit.

Yes, precisely... and if you want to do everyone another favor, use magnet links...

Magaupload had a several million users, so unless you are at least a moderately big fish, no need to worry.
Still... as I wrote before you might want to start check out the site of the TOR project...

There is an interesting paragraph in that article:

"The group have been accused of engaging in a scheme that took more than $500 million away from copyright holders and generated over $175 million in proceeds from subscriptions and advertising. Megaupload's lawyers have said the company simply offered online storage."

This simply shows again that the content industry is not interested, or even understands the need for a new business plan. Like every good businessman they want to sit on their a----- and count the cash.
Their idol is probably soneone like Romney....

    Default Acta

Here's something that's much much scarier than SOPA and PIPA. What makes this really frightening is that this treaty is being negotiated and passed without open debate, has some very draconian penalties for copyright and patent theft and allows copyright and patents to be extended far beyond what they are now.

Or, if you have a better solution for "our" problem, then post that....

That is not really true, the debate in the public and the european parliament has been starting, just check the papers. But it is true that the guy in charge of this bill is a media lawyer who says he will not compromise and he did indeed try to get it passed without discussion. The decision lies with the european parliament, where, and that is true, not too many people are actually even a bit interested in the subject according to my information. They may not be much better than the US congress, but they also want to get re-elected and opposition, incl. new Internet Pirate political parties are beating the drum.
For now SOPA and PIPA have been stopped, were they to pass in the future in the US, that would make ACTA a law too, of course. But it seems the ACTA vote will come before any new SOPA and a few things have already been changed in the ACTA content.

So what it all boils down to is that the American government wants to control the internet, making it illegal to use cloud services, which is what Megaupload and others are really. The Movie and recording industries must be creaming in their pants because the government is doing exactly what they want even if SOPA fails.

Soon, posting on GaijinPot and similar sites will be illegal according to the US Government! (cause you know the Japanese will do as they want)

Might have to go back to walks outdoors, living without music and video--I could do it. Probably would be a refreshing change.

Attorney General set to destroy tens of millions of users' legitimate MegaUpload files

An attorney for MegaUpload -- which was shut down by the US government earlier this month, and whose assets have been frozen, following copyright complaints from the entertainment industry -- says that the US Attorney General is planning to destroy all its user data within a week. With its assets frozen, MegaUpload can no longer pay to host its data with its service provider, and so the AG will cooperate with the erasure of tens of millions of users' personal files -- backups, family photos, personal videos, financial records, and even movies and music in production by independent artists who used MegaUpload as a file-locker while their produced their work. TorrentFreak characterizes this as the destruction of evidence, and I think that's right.

Something tells me the Feds will use Megaupload's server access as an excuse to go fishing.

And also the reason I backup in 3's, that being in addition to DR and archiving.

I backup to my own private servers, which are in turn backed up by my hosting company. So I have a local version, a remote version, and a remote backup.

I assume those in the cloud are in a different country and/or replicated at least to a secondary international DC?
Otherwise one Earthquake and fire and you may be hosed.
Of course, it may be moot as you might already be dead, but the photos must live on!
