Thread: Fight Back: Speak Out Against ACTA, Sign the Petition

  1. #1

Default Fight Back: Speak Out Against ACTA, Sign the Petition

Learn more about the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement and sign the petition against it. If you don't know what the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is please see this: [embed]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoW26CwhcR8[/embed] ACTA can be more dangerous than SOPA and PIPA and can potentially create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, meaning that Internet distribution and information technology would be highly monitored and constantly reported to law enforcement agencies.

We must not let this bill pass, we must continue to preserve the freedoms granted to us by the Constitution. Please sign the below petitions and speak out against this bill, stand up and protest while we still have that freedom. Learn how to act against ACTA. Petitions :

    U.S. anti-ACTA White House Petition: https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petition...ernet/MwfSVNBK
    Canada - Petition: http://www.petitiononlinecanada.com/...zation-act/362
Canada - Take 1 minute to send a letter contesting Bill C-11: http://www.ccer.ca/canadians-only-please/
    Ireland - anti-SOPAIreland Petition: http://stopsopaireland.com/
    Poland - ACTA Referendum: http://referendumacta.pl/
    Global anti-ACTA Petition: https://secure.avaaz.org/en/eu_save_the_internet/

Stand up, Speak out. Learn more about ACTA here:https://www.eff.org/issues/acta

Already too late in Europe. It was signed by many member states a couple of weeks ago. This is stealth legislation that is being forced through without much debate and those who are pushing it through know little about the impact this legislation will have on legitimate sites. There is no way that a site such as YouTube can police every video for copyright infringement. Too much power is being placed into the hands of coprorations who only have to cry wolf and a site goes down.

Why do the media corporations now not take a look at the internet landscape and see how users out there are consuming their content and then put services at a reasonable price in place to address these needs? The reason for most piracy is that there is either a delay in getting the movie or TV series to another country or that the user would never have paid for the content in the first place.

A service that I would subscribe to is an online service, at a reasonable price, where I could avail of all TV content and watch when I want and at a reasonable quality. Place advertisements in the content or around it - I would not care as long as I could get to watch the content when and where I wanted to. Things I miss from home are live soccer games and I would pay to see them. I pay for cable TV now - why do the media companies not look at a new service where they can offer, at reasonable rate or comparable rates to cable TV, for all online content. They could readily control the distribution, access and data around all the viewing. This is an opportunity for the media companies but they are treating this like a threat. Get some savvy guys in there to sort this out and change the way in which content is delivered and paid for and watch the level of piracy drop to nothing. Just look at the impact iTunes has had on the music industry. Yes there is still piracy of music but for the most part those who are pirating the music would never have purchased the music anyway so the media companies are not losing out.

Do they sell many CDs any more? I have not been in a music store in a long time.

I get most of mine through iTunes now. It has been several years since I bought a CD.

I actually have credit on iTunes for a couple free songs. I never bother to use them. There are too many other options.

After reading the article I decided to check it out so I downloaded the Mac version, there are versions for windows and Linuz however,so far Tribler has turned out to be a piece of crap on the Mac. It doesn`t even boot up just quits with an error. They claim that it took five years to develop it, I think they might need five years more!

Here is a copy of the console log:

A buddy of mine who has worked as a producer for 20 odd years just laughs when you ask him how CD sales are doing.

Another buddy of mine makes his living, or rather, used to make his living making video content for music companies, he's having a hard time making ends meet these days because the evil corporations that used to give him work to do can't afford to any more. The squeeze is not on the Lady Googoos of this world, it is on the little guys.

Left to me I would just make a law against selling advertising space on a site which allows copyright infringement.

Doh, I confess that I haven't tried it yet.

Edit: Trying it now--seems to be working just fine.

Edit Edit: Worked smoothly--a little slow. Probably will pick up as more people use it.

They have the same problem he does, because those evil car businesses put them out of business?

If he wants work I know lots of people in several niche industries that could give him work.

Certainly there is work, but people don't want to pay for it, or pay as little as possible, this problem is not confined to Japan, as this wonderful website reveals.

    Clients from Hell

Client: Hey, I want to cancel the project so If you could just give me a full refund of my non-refundable deposit and we’ll both go our separate ways

Me: I’m afraid the non-refundable deposit can’t be returned.

    Client: What? Why?

    Me: It’s non-refundable.

Client: Well I didn’t know that!
Client: We need some kind of epic music. Put the Star Wars theme in there. People will know that.

Me: Uhh, you can’t do that due to copyright.

Client: Indiana Jones it is then.
"I don’t like the fact that you sent me a contract; it makes me feel bound to pay you."
Your MP3 player is full of advertising jingles masquerading as music, that's all. The mentality of taking creative work for free crushes originality.

That would be a fair description. It seems to work well.

Except that you're DLing from a fixed file. So, it's similar to Megaupload's format with a few automated bells and whistles thrown in and better distributed through the cloud. Bet it only takes a year before the Feds twig onto this and storm the owners' mansions in true Rambo style.

    Default Here's a stupid idea

Video artist friend in the UK has been pitching this to various studios and they keep giving him the boot.

His idea is simple and has 2 formats,

The first stage is to put out feature films with minimal advertising placed before the film and enhanced content to run in movie theatres.

At the same time he proposes that lower quality versions of the movie be made available via torrents to the public. These films would lack the extras of the movie versions, have a heavy front load of advertising and would require getting a password from the official website which would also require a subscription to the monthly newsletter. The movie and ad execs are very interested in this idea until he suggests that this lower quality version of the movie be made available for free. It's at this point that security is called and he's given the bum's rush and ejected into the street.

The idea is a sound one, it would kill off the cams and the cartels putting them out and it may even result in a better product being put out for the downloaders to watch. Ad revenues would go up radically as the websites could have counters and trackers to tabulate and build databases that would let them spam their vict...er...customers with targeted advertising.

If you look on mine right now, you will find Mahlers 2. with Solti. The first one is dead since about 100 years, the second one since around 20 years. Also Graham Greene's hilarious Secret Agent, GG died more than 20 years ago...

Your content lawyers are precisely after those "advertising jingles masquerading as music", because that is where the money is.

Maybe you could send us some examples of what you mean by "creative"? Anyone who enjoys his hobby and uploads the result on youtube must be able to make a living of the result?

What do you expect? They have been sitting on their behinds for the last 50 years, watching the bucks roll in. And then someone walks into their office and declares they should give something away for free?
They want to see a paper where it is clear that any new system suggested, guarantees the same money otherwise, they stick with the lawyers, who by sending out computerized letters are also making bucks from the present system.
According to their numbers Dotcom made 150 Million and they claim losses of 550 Million. They simply do not want to do anything new.... Paying Mr Cruise 20 Million for appearing in a movie is better for them.

by the way... I read on the news today, that it seems the germans of all people will not ACTA as planned. And the big demonstrations against ACTA will be happening this afternoon.

Well the big movie businesses have been getting blood from the stone for some time now. The system is breaking down and people are going crazy. I think Selina Kyle says it best

No, it's the new origin of Batman's sometimes girlfriend, Selina Kyle aka Catwoman. You must know the girl who tends to walk on the wrong side of the law, steals expensive jewels and gadgets and has a thing for cats!

If you don't know who catwoman is I suggest you find the nearest comic shop that stocks Marvell and DC comics and start reading.

and my MP3 player currently features Smetana, digitized from vinyl, just to remind me of how much better it sounds when I get home

I think you are deliberately missing the point, if musicians can't make a living selling their music then one option is to turn to advertising for revenue.

I'm not interested in engaging in a p!ssing contest about creativity, I get enough of that in my day job.

Seeing that your sense of humour is abysmally poor I considered that you were being either
    A) dense
    B) purposly obtuse

See! Funny never entered into the equation.

    I chose A.

Default Canada creates its own version of ACTA

    http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/6316/125/

We better get after these people or it will be worse than ACTA or SOPA
