Default Question for foreign attorneys (or anyone connected with the legal field)

    Hi Everyone,

I recently accepted an in-house counsel position for a Japanese company, and will begin working at their HQ in Tokyo this July. I'm pretty green in terms of experience, and I was looking to connect with some wiser and more experienced legal professionals who might be able to suggest resources, groups, etc. that would be useful for someone in my position. Also, any tips in general on fitting in smoothly into Japanese corporate culture would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Do you speak Japanese? Do you want to connect with other in-house lawyers or the Japanese legal world?

Thank you for you reply. I do speak Japanese, and I would be interested in connecting with both other foreign in-house lawyers and Japanese attorneys. My company mentioned something about wanting me to study up on Japanese corporate law when I arrive, so it seems I'll be dabbling a bit in both spheres. If you have any suggestions I would be very interested. Thanks!

組織内弁護士 is the word you need. This group runs some meetings but I don't know what they have for foreign in-house lawyers. http://www.in-house.jpn.org/

If you're female, there's the Foreign Women Lawyer's Association http://fwla.net/. They hold some seminars open to all attorneys that can be interesting, and they offer CLE as well.

There are also groups on Linked In you can search for and last, but not least, is the Roppongi Bar Association http://www.rbalaw.org/. The latter also provides CLE if that's an issue for you. I hope the job works out for you.
