Thread: What DOESN'T Kenko-Hokken cover?

  1. #1

    Default What DOESN'T Kenko-Hokken cover?

This is the basic info I can find online:

    Coverage

The insurance covers 70% of all medical expenses (you pay 30% of expenses)

    Not covered

Medical checkups, vaccinations, childbirth, plastic surgery (including dental beautification),etc
Medical treatment for illness or injury suffered at work or on the way to work
This seems pretty straightforward. However, my wife is telling me that certain surgeries, treatments and long term illnesses don't received coverage. I can't find any English sites with information any more detailed that what I quoted above. My Japanese isn't that bad, but navigating insurance/medical coverage sites in Japanese is still a little beyond me.

A big thank you for any information you may be able to provide.

It won't cover your sex change, titanium heart transplant, Tony Stark - Iron Man implants, or any medical procedure or treatment considered "non-standard" by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

So...it has to be something totally wacky for it not to be covered?

How about if there are two potential treatments for something - is only the cheapest option allowed?

some pre-existing conditions, childbirth and obstetrics, cosmetic surgery, injuries from a warzone, attempted suicide, reflexology and some herbal treatments.

You will usually choose one or the other based on doctors recommendation, and pay 30% of the bill when you get the treatment. No haggling by HMOs over the bills.

I knew a guy at work who contracted leukemia, was in and out of hospitals for 6-12 months, his treatment was covered.

I believe that childbirth IS covered in that you get a fixed amount from the state (it's somewhere around 35 to 40 man). We had a homebirth with both kids and actually made a small profit out of the first one!

It covers hangovers, which is awesome, ihomo.
I am financially motivated to whore myself out.

We are in Nara, my wife was covered for both births and hospital visits but many prefectures in Japan do not cover childbirth. Depends on where you live, mostly.

We live in Kanagawa and got 420,000 for the childbirth. Then, after the birth, we got our daughter her own insurance card and went to our city hall with my wife's receipts for her care. They are paying for a portion of that after the fact as well (about 4man). Next year we can then put those medical bills onto our tax return to get a small tax break. Make sure you take what the system allows!

It doesn't cover the contraceptive pill EVEN IF it's prescribed not as a contraceptive but to help regulate menorrhagia or to regulate unusual hormone levels etc.

I do not understand why you are ask king in the first place.

    1. Your wife should be able to explain it.

    2. Do you have something now or in the predictable future you think might require it?

    3. You have to have health insurance anyway. Are you comparing national health insurance with something?

    1. If only. My wife is completely hopeless when it comes to things like insurance/taxes/instruction manuals.

    2. No

    3. Comparing it with the private plans that allegedly cover things that the national doesn't cover.

Having babies seems like a poor business plan.
