I was briefly part of a socialist collective once by dint of some pay-to-play seed money after it acquired rights to an abandoned urban factory which we planned to turn into living units. The only rule we had was -- and I quote -- "To each according to his needs. From each according to his ability."
First order of business was to divvy up the space based on the principle of "to each according to his need". I never got past that part though to the "from each according to his ability" part because all the alpha collectivists in the group soon made it clear that their "needs" for space required two to three times the average space allotment because of all their "important community activities" but they could only afford to pay for one space allotment.
Never did get back my seed money either as it disappeared like a rock into the "general welfare fund".
