Thread: Recognizing that one is not Japanese

Oh it was most definitely an insult. But not the one you thought it was. But now that Piethrower has gone and properly freaked out incorrectly, I'm sure he'll be here to try to claim much the same as you did.

Anyways, 'my finest hour'? You do realize this is Gaijinpot right?

Well, what is it? Are you still going with the urban dictionary "woman" defense? That seemed pretty lame to me.

I've sat back and watched this thread turn into a sh!tfight of, in many cases, wierd theories, opinions, character assasinations and the usual abuse. In fact, I sometimes wonder if some of the abusers are ambidextrous, using the keyboard to abuse other posters with one hand while indulging in a bit of self abuse, with the other hand, simultaneously.

So, typing with both hands, here is my humble opinion. When I'm in Japan (about 25% of the time), I let my wife's family and my J friends choose the language that they want to converse in. Japanese, English or a mish mash of both are all OK. No-one judges anyone by their language proficiency and the conversations are relaxed, particularly after an hour or two of drinking ( Did you know that slurring is multi-lingual, and easily understood by all, except non drinkers?).

I don't have a problem with native English speakers who want to talk in Japanese, unless they are just using it to show how much more fluent they are than me. At that time, I just let them know what I think of them and walk away. Throwing a warm beer in their face is optional (never waste a cold beer that way).

In words of very few syllables; go with the flow and don't judge others 'cause it can really fcuk up a good time. Anyone for a beer?

I'm drunk but not that drunk...yet and after just reading Oxy's latest post (see above), I find myself in the unusual position of not being the most inebriated person on the board.

Would you feel better if I lied and said that I was referring to his height? You read his post, he said he's taller than me, why would I claim otherwise?

Actually, I'm surprised you didn't go 'schoolyard' on me earlier but I guess the small fact that I'M TALLER THAN YOU may have held you back.

So if we can get back on track, the gaijins you like the best are the ones who remind you of you. Fair enough - we're all narcissists to some degree. So boastful, fat gaijins who don't drink beer with average intelligence and inflated opinions of their Japanese ability are potential best friend candidates for you. Well it ain't me babe as Bob Dylan growled but I don't reckon you'll ever have to go friendless...

(If I may I'd like to instruct you on how to reply. I've thrown a tomato at you which, as usual, went splat against the thickness of your head. If you're in the mood to retaliate pls do it like a man. To wit, pick up your own goddam tomato - don't chop up mine into 8 parts and send up a feeble shower of tomato dregs. Are you following this metaphor? I mean don't dodge my post by dissecting every single sentence in it with your dull wit. It's a weak man's play. And no tomatoes! I'll be very disappointed if I find any tomatoes or other legumes in your reply.)

I have recently been doing rajio taisou every morning. It reminds me of the old days when I worked at a Japanese factory. The reason why I'm doing it is not be become more Japanese, but because I don't want to become a bent old man in the future.

I hope fellow gaijin understand my heart.

..and NO, I haven't been here for too long IMO.

So can I safely assume you think that the saying "nice guys finish last" is complete bollocks?

Have to be honest here when I say I always must always skip 1990's posts because although I know he/she is a regular poster here, I cannot recall even one single post. Not sure why. I guess there were no " meat & taters" on the menu, all "gravy" by the sounds of things. Don't like gravy.

My general rule of thumb is that if a post doesn't include at least small portions of viciousness, scornful condemnation, pathetic and/or most triumphant humour, really big words or just shite I don't understand, I don't bother reading it.

Recognize you are not Japanese, but recognize that you are a citizen/resident of Japan.

I think the whole wannabe Japanese thing is just a phase.

When I was younger I was probably like that jackass; All high and mighty and so eager to be so Japanese. It was only after working in Japanese companies for 7 years and marrying (and divorcing) a J-lady that I realized ", Damn, I like being American"

I guess age brings experience that allows you to make honest comparisons and contrasts that a lot of younger people in their early 20's don't have.

    As for language rules:

    Gaijin only - English
Japanese with Non fluent Gaijin - English
Japanese with fluent Gaijin - Japanese

Yeah, I had a feeling I was being largely ignored by Australian peoples.

That must be a cultural difference between Australians and NZers, eh!

Perhaps it is because I've resigned myself to always be open in this way.

-just because we say it is a bird, does not make it so. What would a bird be if we called it something else?

The ego says that the world is vast, and that the particles which form it are tiny. When tiny particles join, it says, the vast world appears. When the vast world disperses, it says, tiny particles appear. The ego is entranced by all these names and ideas, but the subtle truth is that world and particle are the same; neither one vast, neither one tiny. Every thing is equal to every other thing. Names and concepts only block your perception of this Great Oneness. Therefore it is wise to ignore them. Those who live inside their egos are continually bewildered: they struggle frantically to know whether things are large or small, whether or not there is a purpose to joining or dispersing, whether the universe is blind and mechanical or the divine creation of a conscious being. In reality there are no grounds for having beliefs or making comments about such things. Look behind them instead, and you will discern the deep, silent, complete truth of the Tao. Embrace it, and your bewilderment vanishes.

Awesome! From now on, I'm blaming any excess drinking, lack of productivity, or general debauchery, on those tiny particles.
