    Exclamation Check Cashing Japan/US

I read a forum 8 years ago about checking cashing in Japan and I have lived here for 24 years so I know it can be done if you have a bank account with the bank you want to cash it at. There is no problem and no wait time.
I have a unique problem where I have an IRS check that needs to be cashed or deposited. The problem is my banks in the US and my back in Japan will not cash them because my accounts are in my name only and I filed jointly so the check is in both out names so I can not cash it. As you know traditionally the accounts are in the husbaband's name.
I really would just like to go somewhere in Japan with my wife's ID and cash the check.
    Ideas from someone?

Cashing a check would be impossible. Consider, a Japanese bank would not know a check from the U.S. Federal Government from a page of the latest manga!

The closest thing would be to arrange for a deposit of the funds into your account at a Japanese bank. For this, you would have to pay a hefty service charge, and wait 21 business days.

I do not know if there are any services on the U.S. military bases.... if you could get into one... that could do what you are requesting.

You could always sign the back and send it back to family in the States to have it deposited into your account there....
... and thanks to you well_bicyclically, you helped me a lot.

This is a good heads up for us joint filers. I guess your best bet would be to open a joint account in the US and have both of you sign the check and send it there.

    1. Don't cash it. Deposit it. Withdraw later.

    2. If the U.S. bank wants both signatures to cash it, why can't both of you sign the check?
