Thread: Language barrier in a relationship

  1. #1

Default Language barrier in a relationship

Is a language barrier bad, good or irrelevant in a relationship?

To have a good relationship, good communication is a must, however some couples can have a relationship while they dont even speak the same language.

What about the GPers? Does your better half speak English or you communicate with your hands? Had any good/bad experience with the language barrier when in a relationship ?

Some of us actually make the effort to learn Japanese. Any imbecile can become semi-conversational within 6 months of effort with consistent study habits.

Good. For one, it makes you carefully consider your words.
I think it's true and that's good enough for me.

I can't imagine a good relationship with such lack of communication...
well, you don't need to have the BEST skills... but is kinda boring if you can't talk about more than the trivial "how was your day / I can't understand what you say / I'm leaving / I want the divorce".
...entao eu tomei uma flechada no joelho.

I have found it not to be a big problem as long as you are getting along well.
The problem really comes in when you aren't..
Having a fight with a language barrier thrown in is a prescription for disaster.. lol..

I think communication is important in a relationship but you can have a meaningful relationship even if you and your partner speak different languages. I think the key is that you are TRYING to learn the other person's language. I do think there are cases where it isn't necessary though, especially if you are both fluent or at least competent in one language.

As for myself, my Japanese should be much better for how long i have been here, but the truth is that i live in an English bubble. I do study but without a school it is usually just self study, but my girlfriend helps me and i do the same with her English. It can be a challenge when you want to talk about specific topics or technical areas though.

Not if you have a good slang dictionary available... lest "you as_" gets translated as "you roba"

There are people who get by without being fluent in a common language, but it's not the smart way to go about it. When you move on to bigger things like sending the kids to school, buying a house, or making arrangements for your parents' care, you both need to be able to fully express yourself. There's also the question of how many couples stay together without realizing that they aren't as good of a match as they think.
