So you are a fat, out-of-shape English teacher making about 2-3M. Yet, you live in a Navy town full of men in great shape who make an average of 6-7M. Good luck with that.

LOL...actually I'm in pretty good shape, but thanks for giving me a laugh. I pictured the typical otaku-beard-neck guy yelling about anime and manga.

Tell people,"Now this is a secret, but I'm working for the CIA and I'm training all of these navy guys to speak English, see." Just don't let the navy guys hear you, cause well, they're big and kinda nuts.

Many lies here in this thread. First of all, the average enlisted makes exactly what the average ESL instructor makes. Military pay for the grunts in the US is not really that high, especially after the exchange rate. The average soldier would have to make 3200 USD per month just to equal what the average eikaiwa grunt makes. This is the case for officers, but not for enlisted. By and large most enlisted do not make much money. Granted, eikaiwa grunts have to pay rent and the navy soldiers don't.

Even the average Naval officer doesn't make 6-7 million yen a year that is almost 7,000 US dollars a month or more. Hell even lowly programmers here make more than the military officers by and large.

I don't want to be an a-hole but you don't really know shiet. My friend is a dental officer for the navy. Here is his total compensation package. He is an O-3 rank:

Base salary: 4k usd per month
    Utility: 1k usd per month
Accommodation: exact rent amount up to 8k usd per month
    Food: 1k usd per month

Let's say the guy rent a nice house up to 7-8k usd month. His total compensation is about 177k usd per year before any retention bonus. The best part about his compensation package is that his base salary is the only taxable income. The rest is tax free.

As for your regular grunt, here is the compensation package in Japan, assuming E-3 or E-4 rank:

Base salary: about 2k usd per month
    Utility : 1k per month
Accommodation: exact rent amount up to 4-5k usd per month
    Food: 1k usd per month

If the grunt gets a nice mansion for pimping purpose at 4-5 k usd per month, his total compensation is about 90k per year.

In my calculation, I haven't even accounted for the Tri-care Coverage for soldiers and their family members. Basically, there is no fee. Soldiers and family members can get everything for free, including checkup, drugs, and surgeries. There are plenty of people abusing this plan for free cosmetic surgeries. The entire plan is worth about 8-10k a year.

In essense, you are WRONG. Isn't it depressing to realize that your Ivy League degree is earning you less money than a military grunt with only a HS diploma? BTW, the compensation that I am breaking down for you is income after tax. The utility, accommodation, and food portions are non-taxable income.

The navy and the airforce types are usually ok. Squids usually seem to lose their sanity briefly whenever they get shore leave.

I would heartily NOT recommend taking the Hatter's advice–he's quite starkers after all. Besides that's what Steven Seagal did back in the day and all it got him was a nasty talking to by some real CIA agents, a quick trip to Fuchu and then a one way ticket home.

I had some trouble believing this so I looked it up.

    E-3 base pay: $1981.20
OHA ceiling for Yokosuka, E-3/E-4 with no dependents: $2272.72
    Utility allowance: $899.62
    Move-in allowance: $710.00
COLA for Yokosuka, E-3/E-4 with 3 years service: $466.42

Adds up to ~$68K/year. What am I missing to get to $90K? Either way, pretty awesome.

Well I signed up for Jcupid a few days ago, have contacted 142 females of whom I have a running conversation with about 30. And thats just getting started. Haven't even delved into the chinese and korean users yet, nor the more location specific users. That is a pretty good website. I'll have to check out worldfriends next.

Well, I used similar calculators with dependents. I used the Tokyo rates instead because most of the IT and Eikaiwa loudmouths are in Tokyo. Anyway, there is something missing in your calculation. The COLA that you get is given every 2 and a 1/2 weeks. Thereforer, the money given for food is more like 1k. So, with that in mind, an E-3 or E-4 with 2-3 years of experience and dependent based in Tokyo would get about 90k a year.

Either ways, it's ridiculous for some nobody to pretend that the salary of an Eikaiwa monkey is on the same level as a military physician or dentist. Coolgaijin, you aren't as cool as you think.

It is depressing in a sense, but their salary is a lot lower once they return home from Active Duty. State-side even the officers make pretty paltry money. Sure they live the high life here in Japan, but guess who makes more money when we go home and leave this damn island (which in my experience, most J-girls dating foreigners want)?

In any case few Japanese want to marry soldiers, let alone American soldiers. Due to a few retarded kid Marines down in Okinawa that is.

    PROTIP:

E-1s do NOT live off-base except in exceptional circumstances. Generally only E-4 or above do, in the Army I am pretty sure it is E-5 and above. While on the clock, these guys are working 12-14 hour days under extreme stress (except maybe Chairforce). The programmers or financial guys are working easy paper pushing desk jobs making the same amount or more.

Also keep in mind that the dollar is far weaker than the yen right now. After the exchange rate I am making more than the dental guy, and I have no kids to support. Granted he probably has nicer digs than me and a military sponsored automobile. But again, the law of averages. Most soldiers here are obviously not O-3 and are not getting said bonuses. The vast majority of the soldiers here live on-base, work long shifts and are not that well compensated. Granted, it is probably considerably more than the eikaiwa douches make.

I have nothing but respect for the military, despite my occasional anti-government sentiments. It's something I wasn't strong enough to stick with.

I agree that the lower ranking and younger ones in the military dont make as much but I make a pretty good chunk. attatched is my own personal pay and recently being promoted and coming up on 12 years in the service it jumps up to about and extra 400 a month. (not reflected on this pay stub) The pay is split up in 2 weeks payments. so roughtly every 2 weeks (1st and the 15th) I get around 3k USD then some of my money goes into a retirement plan and other deduction

Again, how many years of experience have you had with Japanese women? I have over 6 years of experience. You really don't know crap about Japanese women their culture.

At the end of the day, they definitely care about the size of their mate's wallet and benefits. You just don't have much luck with the natives right now because you appear and sound like a douchebag. But, just some words of caution: stay the hell away from girls strictly dating foreigners. These girls are damaged goods and probably have been screwed by multiple gaijins in multiple positions before.

As for the off-base housing, if you are single, you need to be a NCO to be authorized to live off-base. But, if you are married and have dependents, you will automatically qualify for off-base housing.

And, no. You don't make more a dental guy. The retention bonus per year for a dental guy is about 20-40k/yr. So, his total compensation is more than 200k/yr.

Lastly, a stateside grunt, like an E-3 or E-4 with 2-3 years of experience, makes about $50-60k a year. It isn't bad considering the lower standard of living here.

Actually a J-girl would be much better off marrying a US serviceman than an American English teacher. Housing, family medial, schooling and perhaps a retirement check will all be covered if the husband doesn`t fu-k things up.

Also if she decide she wants out of the marriage she can garnish part of his salary and there`s no easier way to get an alimony check than to garnish wages from an ex-husband who works for the US government.
THEY DON'T WANT ALL YOU GAIJIN HERE ANYMORE!!!
