Looking to start a new anime series to improve my Japanese skills. I loved Death Note and started Code Geass, but not sure if it's for me yet. What's your favorite anime?

That one with all the chicks in it.
Adam, if you wanna improve your Japanese skills get a Japanese girlfriend and practise writing kanji on her back & butt cheeks. But if it's a geek hug you're looking for, just ask for it without pretense.
FWIW, back in the day Crayon-Shinchan enriched my Japanese vocabulary and taught me that mooning was an important aspect of Japanese culture.
Cowboy Bebop. Awesome series. One of the few anime I actually like. From the opening theme song by Yoko Kano to the very clever scripts it's the best anime ever made. After that everything else is a disappointment. Others I have liked are -- Akira (movie) and Trigun was okay (I like anything with a cowboy/western slant). Apart from that I find it all a bit repetitive.
I concur, bebop was great.
Ghost in the shell series was also pretty good from what I remember. Stand Alone complex etc.
Try the series "Dennou coil" if you can find it, pretty nice stuff.
and one of my favorite.
Jungle wa Itsumo Hare nochi Guu. Well ive only seen one episode which was pretty funny.
movies: GITS, Appleseed, Akira, anything from Ghibli, anything from Makoto Shinkai with a focus on (Byōsoku Go Senchimētoru (stunning visuals)), Steamboy.
meh im a geek.
Down with geeks first!
Then with anime second!
You want to improve your Japanese skills with anime?!? Really? Really? Really?
I bet you can't wait for subservient $ex bots to take the place of real Japanese women so you don't have to talk to them...
Can't rain all the time.
Grave of the Fireflies by far. I really had a hard time watching it. Didn't expect that all from a cartoon. It was so ____ing sad.
Full Metal Alchemist had a great storyline and is the best anime series imo (except those silly jokes) but again too depressing. Haven't watch the remastered series though.
Naruto has a good storyline but I could never stand the childish jokes and high pitches voices. Because it was so popular it got ruined with meaningless filler episodes. So I stopped watching it a long time ago and only read the manga once every 6 months.
I heard One Piece is good (it's the most popular anime in Japan) but after watching the first 20 episodes I stopped watching. I heard it gets better later on so maybe I will give it a try sometime.
Actually haven't watched a single anime in years. My friend recommended me to watch Jdrama's to improve my japanese and since I watched GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) I'm totally hooked. It's way better then anime. Maybe I'll make a new topic about it![]()
Macross was good! Almost everything by CLAMP. Ginga Tetsudo 999, Maetel and Captain Harlock. Evangelion despite it's obvious ripoff from the Kabala. It wasn't an anime but was a manga- Densha Otoko. Most of Ghibli's works except for a few like Yamada no Hitobito, Grave of the Fireflies-IMO Takahata is a lousy director.
Paduwan in you great evil I sense
Technically; lousy storyline, came in massively overbudget and was late. I personally don't like the director who did this and Meet the Yamadas, he lacks Miyazaki's touch.
I was also less than impressed with the Ghibli version of the EarthSea Story, there are four massive books in the series and the director, Miyazaki's son, cut and pasted in a truly haphazard fashion that reduced the impact of the story. Overall Studio Ghibli, under the guidance of the master, has produced a number of masterpieces. There is a certain quality that viewers expect from Ghibli, it's that quality that can be found in

Grave of fireflies was a hard one to finish.
Yeah Full Metal Alchemist was good, very sad though
That reminds me. Magnitude 8.0 is also a nice one. Its an interpretation of a girl and her little brother that live in Tokyo and then the big one hits. recommendable.
