    Default Canada rules, Europe sucks

Not my opinion, but according to this woman...
Any truth to this? Or is she just trolling?

    Europe’s racism problem

    by Adrienne Clarkson
Europeans look at citizenship in terms of race and blood. Having fought each other for so long over so little territory, an “us vs. them” mentality, accompanied by the feeling that their people are superior to others, has been bred into their national sensibilities. The immigrant integration issues plaguing European societies today can be understood in the context of this racism, pure and simple.
Such feelings of superiority are absent for a number of reasons in a place like Canada. Canadians have constructed a society that accounts for differences. Here, the concept of citizenship is more post-modern and inclusive.

I am pretty sure Adrienne Clarkson has better things to do than go trolling. My guess is that she wrote this article while traveling abroad. Canadians, when out of the homeland, have moments of romantic reflection during which we can only see the wonders of our nation. Of course upon return to Canada, like all Canadian, she will whine, b*tch, and moan about all of the problems that exist in the country. I think it would be a stretch to say that Canadians are any less racist than those in any other country. I would agree however that we have built a fairly good road toward citizenship for immigrants. Whether this was due to an altruistic acceptance of all and not out of pure necessity is questionable. But ya, Europe sucks.

I met a Mexican guy one time who had lived in the US, Canada, and all over Europe. He said the only country in which he really felt accepted, and not looked down on as a 'dirty Mexican' (this guy was a PhD holder) was Canada.

Canada is not free of racism, but it definitely handles multi-culturalism better than many other countries.
The only thing in Japan that is harder than being a foreigner in Japan, is being Japanese in Japan.

Can't comment on the Multi Cultural aspects of Canada. That seems quite good. But in terms of living there? I've had a brother and friend marry Canadian lasses, move there and leave after 2 years. Both of them couldn't stand it. Both of them have lived in Japan, the UK, Canada, Australia and one has lived in France. I've been there a several times and Canadians have a huge chip on their shoulders about people south of the border. On more than one occasion I was yelled at or told to go home, back to America. I'm not even American! I think for 3rd worlders, moving to Canada is heaven. For first worlders, there are a lot better options. Growing up there, I'm sure it's fine - outdoor sports, lots of ice hockey and amazing wilderness. Kids in the Hall plus Canadian actors are pretty awesome as well.

Europe sucks indeed because we let all those poor immigrants in without any degrees (assuming they would eventually return to their homeland wich they didn't) In Holland they refuse to speak Dutch but still they are living off welfare. If you say anything about this you will get called a racist.

But aslong as you behave and adept and try to make an effort to speak the language of the country europe is pretty welcoming imo.

She should have better things to do than write super-sillyus pseudo-sociologies barely worthy of a C+ level undegraduate as well, IHOMO.

What a bunch of sanctimonious rubbish.

Europe and Canada are fundamentally differently constituted societies, Theirs being Old World, and Ours New, and We have only been superior for a couple of decades.

We would have locked up Her People if we had as good an excuse as Pearl Harbour, after all.

Having said that, she is a brown one (Chinese), so perhaps her reception in and impressions of Europe are quite different than those of you (??) and I.

To be fair, the racism and petty bigotries I observed in Europe, and especially the UK, were mind buggling. And the UK is singularly situated to be obligated to pay for their imperialist sins. through an open borders policy.

I always thought of her as a vapid airhead with a delightful sense of humour, and she was always a good sport on 22 Minutes appearances.

But yeah, sounds about par for her course. She has always pretended to an intellectual ability she obviously lacks.

Was it the Sheer Boredumb that killed it for them?

To Wit: Canadian Intellectualism, defined as a discussion over whether Gretzky was a better hockey player than Gordie Howe.

I have been back for a few years now, and I am dying on the vine.

Like you said, great place to grow up, especially Vancouver, but this place is benumbing, and be-dumbing.

Wow, this is quite a lot. Maybe she and Ralston Saul were just drunk. But, yeah, it is extremely simplistic.
And we were pretty bad to her people -- head tax and so forth.
Hey, if you decamp, don't be like Conrad Black.
    I really hate the NTA.

I'd say the Rocket was better than both Gretzky and Howe. But then you what they say about us Canadians "3 Canadians-4 opinions" the guy from Vancouver is waffling.

So, where to next? The PRC, Vietnam, Thailand, Russia????

Good lord....you wrote that as if you'd actually watched 22 Minutes. 22 minutes is a long time to watch, er, 22 Minutes. Bureaucracy does not good comedy make, at least not intentionally. If given the choice, I'd rather cut out the middleman and pay my share of Newfie welfare in cases of Molson Stock Ale, rather than do so by pretending to genuflect to the mediocrity of statist propaganda. Rick Mercer would be Mr Big Schwingin' Dick in my books if he'd do a "Crazy muslims" bit after his "Stupid Americans" one, but the CBC is such a vile pit of leftie political correctness they'd never allow such from an LA-aspiring Cancon "comic".

Anyhoo I've said it before on these boards, and I'll say it again...the only interesting thing to be said re my home ON NATIVE'S land is that it's the least worst place in the world. I'm neither bragging nor being modest....which I suppose is one of our traits.
    Eschew obfuscation.
