What software could I use to make writing circulate a symbol?

I want to make writing go around a symbol in a circular fashion so the writing encircles it completely, how do I do this? What software would be good to do this with? Word, gimp? anything else?

gimp might be able to do it, but as suggested above... Illustrator if you have it. If you don't have it don't spend the money, just get any vector editing software. The specific feature you are looking for would be putting text on a path. Google would probably return good results including programmes and tutorials.

I need to write most of the writing one way (to enclose most of the circle) and the bottom word the other way. How would i do this in ink scape or word?

Again TH points out the obvious, but for the newbie could be difficult. Photoshop CS5/6 can also achieve the same result

This took about 5 minutes (text was only 30 seconds) using WordArt in MS Publisher 2007 (it's way easier to use than in Word since you're not dealing with line breaks).

To align objects you just draw a perfect square with a cross line running horizontally and vertically. Then delete afterwards. Child's play.
