    Default Tourist Visa to China?

I went to the consulate in Awaza, Osaka, and was told that I cannot apply for a tourist visa at the consulate, but instead must go to one of their associated travel agencies. For example, the one across the street. I went there and they told me they could process a travel visa, but it's 20,000 yen.

Is this the standard way of getting a tourist visa for China for an American living in Japan on a Spouse Visa?

    Thanks in advance

Yes, that is correct. Y20,000 for single or a multiple entry ticket, and they will charge you Y1000 if you want to have them takyubin your passport back to your house. Turn-around time is 4-days.

For what its worth I paid like Y34,000 for a multiple entry biz visa to China.

Can you read? He is American.

    Americans cost more.

Looks like the "travel shop" selling visas in front of the consulate/embassy makes a healthy margin, probably "friends" with the staff inside. So you can save Y5000 by going to the embassy in Tokyo, but the Shinkansen will set you back Y26,000.

    Default Super Easy

I got a Chinese Tourist Visa at a travel agency in Nagoya.
It was a lot easier than I thought since they have an English speaking staff.
The documents they ask you to fill in is all in English too.
I'm planning on getting a visa to Egypt through them soon.

    This is their website

I'm not sure if you can apply directly even in Tokyo for what I heard from japanese friends.
I always did it via a company called Weston http://wst.co.jp they were very informative and with a "ok let's try!" attitude, getting me a 90 day visa for China though it isn't normally possible. The only problem is I think you will need to speak in japanese to them.
