Thread: Best Mobile Wifi plan (pref Softbank)

Default Best Mobile Wifi plan (pref Softbank)

Looking for a mobile wifi plan but so hard to wade thru the details.
Have NTT flets hikari at home and a Softbank iPhone.
Would like to get a pocket wifi in order to use internet on the PC at my personal office (away from my home) and while I'm on the road. I work on the road a lot and think a portable system would be better for me than installing another dedicated line at the office.
The Softbank Unlimited Data discount Flat for Ultra Speed seems like it might do the trick but like I said, I can't make heads of tails of their homepage -- all the plans sound the same and it's not very clear if you pay 3,980 yen a month or 7.890 / month and so on.

Called Softbank but even after talking to them, can't sort out the plans. I heard there is a softbank plan that is something like: if you have a smartphone and get a flat data plan, they throw in a free pocket wifi.

I don't need superfast speed, don't plan on using it to watch lots of youtube. and besides 4G isn't available yet in my area. (Shikoku, Kochi)

The UQwimax stuff looks like it might be good too, but again, hard to understand the home page and various plans and devices.

bump , I'm interested in this as well. I would be happy just having wifi and calling through skype, but if I could get a smartphone + pocket wifi I guess that would be okay.

I recently responded to a similar thread (http://forum.gaijinpot.com/showthrea...ernet-contract).

I think nifty is the best deal since they have the cashback offer since this week. However, the link I posted there won't get you that, you need to go through an affiliate link like the one at http://shimajiro-mobiler.net/2012/07/03/post11171/ (just click on @nifty Wimax on the top of the table)

This one compares all the cheaper wimax options, but it's outdated since nifty just bumped up the cashback from 5000 to 10000.
Downside is that you're locked to nifty for the WM3600R device. I don't care since I'm not expecting to be able to sell them for much and I figure the next time I renew a contract there will be better devices for free, just like now. (I just subscribed.)
If that bothered me I would go with biglobe.
Both are a tad bit slower than UQ, maybe 80-90% of the speed from what I see on test pages, but you get free device + cashback, so I think it's worth it.

Great info -- looks a lot better than what Softbank has to offer. Or at least, I can make sense of what the actual offering is. Softbank tends to wrap everything in cosmic sales hype: The "super-ace" package gives you "hyper speed plan blue" access, unless you are a former "magic connect anywhere" customer, in which case you might be eligible for "happy omega discount 5000"

In the earlier thread "best option for 1 year contract" you said

"They give you the WM3600R plus the cable with an ethernet port for free (others charge for the cradle,) and there is no initial application charge (like bigglobe has).”

does that mean that the router connects to a computer via ethernet? I was under the impression that I could use a typical router with my PC or several PCs in the room wirelessly. [later: I guess it must generally be wifi connections.

[I signed up. expect the router to arrive soon. Looks like a pretty straightforward deal. Thanks.]
