I am trying to be the honest foreigner and make sure my residence tax is paid. Here is the deal.
I lived in Kyushu for exactly one year, then moved to Kansai. I will have been here 5 months before I move to another Asian country in February.
I have contacted my local ward office in Kansai and will pay the res tax I owe for the past 5 months. But I am unsure about taxes in the other place...I heard res tax is not charged until after your first year. Does that mean I don't owe any taxes for that year? Or does it mean I will be charged retroactively for that first year? If so, would they have contacted my former employer or sent a notice to my old apartment?
Finally: I am going to get a re-entry permit and hang onto my gaijin card (I have a work visa that expires in 2005), either so I can come here on vacation or in case I want to return to work/live here. So when I leave in February it will not be a permanent departure. Will that have any bearing on if the authorities will look into my taxes before allowing me to take off? What about if I come back for just a vacation and then surrender the gaijin card?
Thanks for any help!
