Thread: two people one room

    Default two people one room

    Hello,

A question for all of you knowledgeable Japan people. I'll be moving to Osaka very shortly and my wife is there at the moment looking for an apartment. She's been told that as there are two of us, we are not allowed to live together in a one room apartment, thus causing our monthly rent to skyrocket. This strikes me as a bit unbelievable. Can anyone confirm that this is just a bad agent trying to get lots of money, or is this actually a standard? Thanks.

i might be completely wrong but from my knowledge,
If its a 1 room apartment then its designed for only 1 person and also the rent and key money etc.. so if their is going to be 2 of you then you would have to pay double the original price and also 1 more problem is that usually the landlords or real estate agents sometimes worry if one of you leaves the apartment and their by dont pay the rent they will lose their money BUT this kind of thing doesnt really effect married couples like yourselves and also i found landlords and real estate agents usually give foreigners hell....
So suggest finding a real estate company that finds apartment for foreigners.

your wife is f***ing with you. she saw the miniature size of the apartments in japan and made up some bs to convince to spring for a larger pad. funny thing is, she can back up her story by saying "what i meant was that we can't PHYSICALLY live together in one room."

These are terms set by the landlord, although usually living together is prohibited in one-room places. Not sure it's a money issue so much as, you know, two people living in a room the size of a Volkswagen "disrupts the wa".

You can either lie and say it's only one of you, or you can have your real estate agent find you a place that allows couples. There are such places, even one-rooms. You're gonna pay your real estate lady one month's rent anyway so you might as well put her to work for you and not settle til she finds something you're completely satisfied with.

If you do end up living together (and telling your landlord), they will probably want both your names on the lease. Also, what do you plan to do about a guarantor? Your chances of finding a good place will probably increase by a thousand percent if you can get someone creditworthy, preferably an employer or if your wife is Japanese, her father, to cosign with you. If you're on your own, good luck. I would, however, reccomend this route over settling for any "gaijin-friendly" facility as you will probably have access to a better selection and pricing.

In any event, regardless of what the landlord says, I think sharing a one-bedroom would be pretty cramped. What were you thinking??!

Ive not heard of that before. I shared a 1K with my g/f for a few months - it was ok - the biggest problem was storage space. . a 1R would prolly be too small for 2. Rents arent that expensive so Im sure you can get somewhere bigger.

I had the same experience when me and my friend try to rent a 1k room. They wouldnt allow it.
So this is what we do, Just rent the place like you will be staying there alone and 'invite' your friend to come stay with you.

This is only possible if the building is not guarded with someone who take notes of who goes in and out of the building

Should be no problem.... an address is an address - and that is all they want, and don't care how high you are stacked.

    thankyou verymuch for the reply!

i will be crashing over my friend's 1k apartment, i was worried on how i register my gaijin card address :/
she saw the contract but all she find was other than she (who signed the contract) only family allowed to stay in.. mmm but not really sure..

on around the apartment the landlord never comes to check (based on her experience)
its going to be ok then,, to register the address..

    its a relief. thanks TJrandom
