Thread: cheapest phone for a student?

  1. #1

Default cheapest phone for a student?

I know that AU offers a student discount, but I have also heard that softbank is very cheap without a student discount? I don't make a lot of calls, but I do use email a lot.

Which one is cheaper in the end? Do they get comparable signals?

    Hi there.

Softbank also offers the student discount.
Although they do seem to have a slightly weaker signal then au.

On the other hand, apart from mail, you can sms with Softie. Not sure if au does that. They couldn't during the years I used them.

So which one is cheaper in the end?
Both providers offers phones for 0 yen when you sign on. So go check out the handsets available and take it from there. My monthly bills have been pretty much identical after my switch, so which provider you choose (between those two) doesn't really matter. If you ask me.

A suggestion if most of what you do is mail:
    1. go for the economy plan,
    2. have it chopped off in half with student discount,
    3. max out the packet-plan so that you can mail for almost no charge.

    Thank you for the advice!

When I had AU about a year ago, there was "cmail" in addition to "email." Is this what you meant by "sms?" I'm not sure what this is.

I travel abroad a lot, so I would like to have one of those phones that can be used (at least email if not calling) in the US as well as in Japan. Do you have any suddestions for this?

If you want the cheapest phone you can't go past the green ones. when you call you pay if you can't pay thats a good thing because you won't run up a debt. As for mail. You are on a computer, right?......

I don't think they will install one in your prison cell for you. They may let you use the one in the Rec. Room though

I am glad to see that foreigners aren't just limited to teaching English, but that they can be comedians too!

Does anyone have any real advice?

AU offers good signal coverage, but if Softbank is the old Vodaphone, be very afraid.

There's a reason we used to call it Nodaphone.

Go with AU. Lots of students use it, so you'll likely be on the same network with your friends, and that's cheaper too.

As far as I'm concerned it could be 13 or 149,598,000 kilometers. It is still an insignificant dust bowl.

But don't get me wrong. Some of my best friends are Australian.....nope....I lied.

If you are urban, and student-ing, it is the best way to go, or so The Natives claim. The best bang for your buck da sou da.

I always had DoCoMo, but that was mostly die to a need for rural coverage.

I will be in the Shinjuku area most of the time, so it should be good.

    Thanks again.

Default Im also looking for one...

I'm a student as well and i've been researching on the internet, softbank looked nice and they offer more phones with their student plans, AU only offers the older models CDMA 1X not the "WIN" models, if they offered WIN i would be sold right away. After looking at the models that use CDMA 1X only one of them looks good and its the newest one so im not sure if it will be offered as a free sign on model. Is there a way to get a WIN model with the gaku wari? Or can anyone tell me what model of CDMA 1x they are using ?
    Thanks!

Adding on to my previous message, i am kind of interested in the new White plan as well, possibly getting that with a packet package since i use mail more than the phone (although some people i know use softbank) i can't find the "hidden" costs anywhere on their page. On the au KDDI page i can find them pretty easy but i'd like to be a bit sure before i go to a store and start asking questions just so i know whats going on.
